Senior Technical Director - Transportation

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Senior Technical Director to join our Roads and Highways Ontario team. You will be responsible for running and building the firm's technical roadway engineering practice. This is a senior role that will involve developing and implementing a strategic plan to expand the firm’s practice to deliver top-quality engineering projects to existing and new clients.

This role is a combination of technical leadership and operational management. In addition, you will also involve participating in management discussions of the firm and direction of the firm.

Day to day activities within this role will involve managing and supporting other technical directors, hiring of staff and managers, leading and mentoring of staff, visiting multiple Arcadis offices to work with various teams and coordination with other teams within Arcadis.  Business development will be part of the role including client relationship management, marketing, proposals both leading, writing, and reviewing/approving. May undertake a Project Director Role to lead delivery of major projects and key clients. Support the management of risk on major projects by leading independent technical reviews and following up review findings. Roles at this level should continuously seek to enhance the business at a strategic and individual level, executing strategy to deliver tangible results for the Arcadis business. Role accountabilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to take a Technical directorate role in various projects, providing leadership, technical advice, quality control and overview as required. You will provide consultancy services for projects and be able to develop solutions that fall outside the standard codes, build professional profile and reputation, at an area level within the industry and within Arcadis, and manage the delivery of specialized components of projects and establish the most effective team to achieve this. You will manage technical risk mitigation, safety, and value in design processes, develop and deliver integrated design programs and key performance milestones and reports at all stages, and assist in the technical development of staff, coaching and mentoring on technical issues. You will establish and consolidate relationships with clients, both during and after project completion, use technical knowledge to identify and realize new client opportunities, and provide technical input into the bidding process.

In this role your direct reports will include other technical directors and your main contacts will be technical staff working on allocated projects and Clients. Technical staff will be managed to ensure delivery to time and cost and Client expectations will be managed. You will promote both the regional and global culture of the business, evaluate technical competence of staff proposed for projects and identify specific training and mentoring needs and take technical line management responsibility for the development and performance management of team members to support the delivery of Arcadis’ business.

You will support recruitment process and will be personally involved in the selection process of Principal Engineers and Associate Technical Directors. You will lead the technical delivery of complex projects ensuring client satisfaction, effective project management and good communication and collaboration between Arcadis colleagues, and ensure that local staff understand the benefits of their utilization as team resources. You will lead on the design of innovative engineering solutions for clients that resolve complex problems and coach and mentor engineering professionals to support the development of Arcadis’ talent pool

When appointed in the role of a Project Manager, will be managing the commercial aspects of the project (contract, invoicing, debt, client management) and will be ensuring that effective financial and project management controls are in place and deployed to enable monitoring, modification and forecasting as appropriate. You will perform independent technical review for complex and/or major project, encourage innovative and entrepreneurial thinking amongst team members, and promote and market all facets of the company’s services during client interfaces. You will also manage technical client relationships with key clients and plays a major role in selling, promote effective and efficient bid management, and provide input into specific technical aspects of individual bids to support the production of high quality winning pursuits. You will be expected to keep up to date with developments in the industry sector and with technical and legislative developments and seek out opportunities to develop a strong professional profile at a National level (e.g. conference presentations, publications and participation in technical committees) and coordinate and manage project teams of multi discipline engineers and technicians of between 20-50 people.

Qualifications & Experience:

20 + years consulting experience on projects of significant scale and/or complexity P.Eng Ontario Demonstrated technical, commercial and delivery acumen Previous relevant experience including leadership of the development and implementation of engineering solutions Previously worked in a project management role and has relevant of project management experience

The salary range for this position is $109,447 - $178,676. The base salary represents Arcadis’ hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
