Aviva's CTU Property Team is seeking an outstanding and motivated Sr Technical Underwriting Specialist. This exceptional opportunity allows you to collaborate with various business units to successfully implement improvement projects that improve portfolio and segment performance. Your role will be essential in providing technical expertise, mentorship, and support while embedding the Commercial Underwriting Strategy across the country.

What You’ll DoDevelop and propose risk selection criteria for all segments within the line of business to ensure balanced growth and profitability in collaboration with ABI & GCS.
Understand and review industry appetite to ensure competitiveness and compliance of the product.
Identify and evaluate emerging risks, engaging with relevant collaborators to develop strategies to address them.
Take an active role in LOB portfolio management, regularly reviewing important metrics, analyzing data, and devising action plans to address existing trends or emerging challenges.
Collaborate with peers in Data Analytics, Claims, and the Technical Community across Commercial Lines to analyze financial data and gain insights, effectively steering our Property portfolio.
Participate in Property Loss and Attritional Claim Reviews to determine current and future loss trends impacting Reinsurance, Pricing, Underwriting Appetite, and Financial Performance.
Ensure all tools enabling corporate and regional underwriting objectives are clearly articulated, aligned, and available to various business units, such as renewal strategies and guidelines.
Develop and embed portfolio controls by working with 1st and 2nd line of defence to establish controls for existing risks and mitigate emerging or potential risks.
Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical expertise to GCS & ABI underwriters.
Ensure regional and corporate service standards and guidelines are achieved and maintained.
Develop simplified underwriting guidelines and procedures, providing training for GCS & ABI on the changes.
Review and develop wordings and endorsements, following the wording framework and approval process.
Consult with senior underwriting staff regarding outstanding or atypical risks to minimize adverse risk selection and maintain the quality and profitability of the portfolio.
Act as a technical resource on risks outside of the authority level of each region and authorize risks within your established authority levels.
Assist underwriters by providing responsive support on individual customer referrals and suggesting increases in underwriting authority to empower underwriters.
Provide quality customer service, including clarification of coverage, wordings, and claims history.
Assist with the introduction and communication of underwriting strategies, coverage, and product changes in a timely manner.
Identify training needs, provide technical input for the creation of training material, and assist during the delivery of training.
Provide technical mentorship regarding products, pricing, systems, and processes.
Collaborate with Enablement to improve and develop all underwriter tools, ensuring they align with business needs.
Improve understanding and knowledge of Risk and Control procedures and objectives.
Maintain solid understanding of all Information Systems/Programs within Underwriting and Claims, recommending improvements to work processes and procedures.
Develop and maintain a knowledge and understanding of company operations and procedures to increase market share within the line of business.
Maintain knowledge of industry trends to anticipate industry/regulatory changes, ensuring all vital management systems are updated.
Participate in the quality assurance audit process as required.
What You’ll BringA minimum of 10 years of LOB underwriting experience.
Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience in business or a related field.
CIP designation or equivalent; CRM or FCIP designation is an asset.
Involvement with Head office initiatives.
Bi-Lingual is an asset.
Proven proficiency in managing multiple and changing priorities/projects, delivering results.
Ability to address business area problems/issues with a long-term perspective.
Strong focus on regional needs, ensuring high-quality service.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proficient presentation skills.
Ability to foster and build strong working relationships within and outside the CTU team.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Dedication to ongoing professional and technical development.
Solid understanding of company underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statutory constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
Knowledge of other functional areas such as Claims, Risk Management, Accounting, etc.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge of RTM, RTG, Case Manager, Commercial systems, and other related systems will be an asset.
