Senior Technologist

Assists the management in the daily operation of departmental activities to include: scheduling, inventory and ordering, personnel evaluation, technical aspects and quality of work.

Acts as a point person for problem solving during hours of shift.

Accurately performs laboratory testing which may require the broad exercise of independent judgment to include the use of advanced clinical laboratory instrumentation and equipment according to the departmental Standard Operating Procedures.

Recognizes and corrects instrument malfunctions within the scope of the operator’s manual and records troubleshooting activities.

Confirms and verifies test results by monitoring for reasonableness and critical values.

Correlates and interprets data generated from testing.

Assists physicians in the interpretation of test results within the scope of the profession.

Establishes quality control and performance improvement activities.

Develops and perform training/competency checklists and provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students and current employees.

Directs the proper storage of hazardous materials and the laboratory safety program in conjunction with the safety manager.

Prepares and/or collects specimens (blood, urine, feces, or other body fluids) for analysis.

Performs instrument and assay validations.

Actively participates in Continuous System Improvement (CSI) and continuing education programs.

Performs duties as delegated by the laboratory director in accordance with HNL’s delegation policy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A.           Education/Experience:

        Must meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for moderate and high complexity testing.  Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related science field from an accredited institution; or, must meet CLIA grandfathered medical technologist requirements. At least four years of experience. Must have NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) experience.

B.           Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. 

C.           Math Ability:

               Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

D.           Reasoning Ability:

               Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions independently.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Good organizational the human relation skills.

E.           Computer Skills:

Ability to use Microsoft Office products and various other computer software including Laboratory Information System.

F.           Certificates and Licenses:

               Specialty certification by a recognized certifying agency for clinical laboratory professionals preferred (ASCP, ASMT, NCA, etc). Must actively demonstrate the pursuance of specialty certification in chosen field of clinical expertise.
