Senior Tool & Die Maker

 

Job Summary

 

Represents mastery in Tool making, defines approaches to problem solving, die/mold building and repair, able to mentor those with less experience, sets and maintain department standards. Job skill set at strong level such that no primary level training (i.e., shop standards in sound precision measurement, machining practices, print interpretation) is necessary.  Sr. level Tool maker with high communication skill and with professional team building attitude a constant.  This person maintains company systems that give continuity to long term accuracy of tool history, Tool PM’s, print revision control. This person leads in “return Dies/Molds to original standards”. This person suggests improvements to dies/molds for increased productivity, ease of servicing, simplification of best practice tool making. This person operates not only as a tool maker, but also as tool making technique auditor to instruct others in proven problem solving techniques that maximize tool life and give maximum productivity in the tools production runs. Leads at proposing solutions as well as at work bench.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

Making

(85%) Builds die from complex set of blueprints and builds jigs and fixtures from sketches, part drawings or verbal instructions. Able to design and build needed tooling even without drawings (10%) Plans construction procedures and methods, selecting the proper materials. (5%) Makes allowances for shrinkage during the heat-treating of tools and metal flow in dies. 

 

Repair

(70%) Repairs molds and dies by identifying and correcting problems.  Analyzes and troubleshoots die cast molds and progressive dies, assesses problems and repairs accordingly. (20%) Disassembles and reassembles all types of progressive dies and die cast molds for routine maintenance or repairs. (5%) Provides support to production area by problem-solving and building tools. (5%) Instructs Tool Room Apprentices and Jr. Tool Makers Performs other duties as required.

 

Education and Experience Profile for  Sr. Tool and Die Maker

 

High school diploma or equivalent required. 1-2 years Machining/Manufacturing Technologies course completion University/College level. Precision Instruments and measuring Print reading Machining processes and controls Quality Control systems and documentation Must have their own tools and tool box 15 years Tool Making (progressive die building and repairing) experience

 

 

High school diploma or equivalent required. Completed Apprenticeship or Machining Technologies course completion or equivalent experience required.

 

Required Skills Mastery

 

Technical/Functional Competencies:

Able to read complex set of blueprints. Able to recognize and compensate for design flaws while maintaining design intent Able to analyze and troubleshoot progressive carbide lamination dies or multi-cavity Die Cast Molds. Steps up to lead the team when needed, providing direction to the team when supervisor or Lead is unavailable. Must have a complete knowledge of all tool room equipment and procedures.  Able to operate Drill presses: drilling, reaming, tapping and c/boring. Lathes: complex turning operations, angles, tapers, threading, etc. Milling machines:  complex milling, slotting, rotary table, boring, indexing, speeds and feds, cutter selection, etc. Surface grinding:  perform complex radius/form grinding, selection of wheels, sine bars, angles and slots, etc. precision measuring equipment (micrometers, Vernier’s and comparators) Knowledge of and ability to perform oxygen/acetylene welding techniques as well as TIG. Able to solve mathematical equations and problems using geometry and trigonometry. Ability to operate CNC and Wire EDM machines is desirable.

Work Environment:

 

Working conditions are normal for an office environment and non-climate controlled manufacturing facility.
