Position Overview

Why This Position is Needed
The increasing emphasis on accessibility and user experience necessitates dedicated resources to monitor and innovate our digital properties. A focused team member will ensure we not only meet compliance requirements but also lead the industry in embracing best practices in the customer online user experience.

 

Responsibilities:

Building a Digital Customer Experience Library: The new hire will develop a comprehensive library of GDM approved components with corresponding front-end code that enhances our digital customer experience. This library will focus on reusable components that will streamline development processes across all businesses. Governance and Standardization

o   Providing standard UX-focused tickets for development teams, ensuring a seamless workflow and consideration of end-to-end customer journey.

o   Ensuring inclusion of UI within UAT phase with set acceptance criteria.

o   Implementing policies centered on accessibility, thereby promoting inclusive digital environments, and ensuring customer-based requirements are met.

Ensuring Compliance with WCAG 2.2 Accessibility Standards The individual will ensure that all current design exceeds the standards set by WCAG 2.2 for accessibility. This involves comprehensive audits, code reviews, and the implementation of best practices for accessibility in design and functionality. Use suite of tools to ensure code is WCAG compliant and follows UX best practices.

Qualifications and Experience

 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design, UI Design, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field. Certifications in accessibility (e.g., Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies - CPACC) would be a plus.

Technical Skills:

Experience in working in/with front-end development technology teams, using languages that include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, & modern frameworks (e.g. SCSS, React, NextJS). Experience building and maintaining design libraries and systems (Figma, low-code or no-code framework, Atomic Design Principles). Familiarity with WCAG 2.2 standards and accessibility best practices. Knowledge of accessibility testing tools (e.g., Axe, WAVE, Lighthouse) for audits and validation.

Experience:

5+ years of experience engaged in front-end development processes, with a focus on user experience and accessibility. Proven track record of implementing accessibility standards on web applications. Experience in collaborating with UX designers and product teams to translate user needs into technical solutions. Prior experience in Agile development methodologies and working within cross-functional teams.

Soft Skills:

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to navigate complex projects and ensure compliance. Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders, including developers, designers, and product managers. Ability to educate and advocate for accessibility practices within the team and company.

Portfolio:

A demonstrable portfolio showcasing past projects that highlight experience in building user-friendly, accessible web applications.

 

Measuring Success

Success in this role will be assessed through a variety of quantitative and qualitative metrics over the first year, including:

Front-End Code Library: Effectively manage and govern the implementation of the digital customer experience front-end code library. Measure the adoption rate by tracking how often and how many development teams utilize the library in their projects. WCAG 2.2 Compliance Metrics: Conduct accessibility audits before and after implementing updates, aiming for a certain percentage (e.g., 90%+) of compliance with WCAG 2.2 standards across all products. Track the number of accessibility issues identified and resolved over time. Customer Satisfaction: Use surveys and feedback mechanisms to gather customer input regarding their experiences with our digital properties. Aim for specific improvements in customer satisfaction scores associated with accessibility and user experience. Collaboration and Communication: Evaluate feedback from team members and stakeholders regarding the ability to work cross-functionally, educate others on accessibility standards, and facilitate discussions. Regularly assess contributions to UX-focused tickets and the clarity and quality of documentation provided for specifications. Training and Advocacy Efforts: Measure engagement in training sessions or workshops conducted for the development teams on accessibility and best practices. Track the creation and dissemination of accessibility policies and guidelines within the organization. Continuous Improvement:

Set goals for personal professional development, such as completing relevant certifications or attending workshops/conferences, and review achievements against these goals
