Summary

The Chief Investment Officer (“CIO”) for Sanford Health is a key member of the senior leadership team responsible for overseeing and managing the health system’s investment portfolio, including endowments, operating reserves, investments and certain other assets.

Job Description

The CIO will develop and implement an investment strategy aligned with the organization's long-term goals and financial objectives, ensuring financial sustainability and growth while managing risks. The CIO will provide updates to the Finance and Investment Committee of the Sanford Health Board of Trustees, and collaborate closely with external partners to optimize returns and enhance the system's financial health.

Develop and implement the organization's investment strategy, ensuring alignment with financial goals, policy, and risk tolerance. Lead the management of the health system's investment portfolio, including asset allocation, manager selection, and performance monitoring. Ensure the investment strategy supports long-term financial sustainability, including liquidity needs, capital reserves, and operational funding.

Oversee asset classes such as equities, fixed income, real estate, and alternative investments. Establish asset allocation targets and manage the rebalancing process based on market conditions and internal needs. Continuously evaluate the performance of external investment managers and conduct due diligence to ensure adherence to investment policies.

Identify and manage investment risks, ensuring diversification and alignment with risk tolerance and liquidity requirements. Work with internal teams and external advisors to develop appropriate risk mitigation strategies. Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements and fiduciary responsibilities.

Provide regular reporting and updates on investment performance, strategies, and risks to senior leadership and the Finance and Investment Committee the Sanford Health Board of Trustees. Prepare and present quarterly and annual reports on the status of the health system's investments. Communicate with other stakeholders as needed regarding the performance and stewardship of invested funds.

Serve as a strategic advisor to the CFO and Treasurer on all matters related to investments. Collaborate with the finance department and other relevant teams to integrate investment strategies with broader financial planning. Provide leadership to the investment team, mentoring staff and promoting a high-performance culture.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, or a related field required. Master’s degree or CFA designation preferred.

10+ years of progressive experience in investment management. Demonstrated expertise in portfolio management, asset allocation, and risk management. Strong knowledge of financial markets, investment products, and regulations. Experience with healthcare or non-profit investment portfolios. Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks governing non-profit institutions.
