Shift Supervisor

Pay Range:

$45.07 - $58.69

The Shift Supervisor (SS) oversees the clinical operations of Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center on an assigned shift basis. The SS is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has been hired as a Staff Nurse in a department within MEMC and has shown by experience, knowledge, behavior, and job performance ability to fulfill the duties of the SS. RNs are selected for participation in this role by the members of the nursing leadership team and are scheduled to act in the SS role on a rotating shift-by-shift basis.

Accountabilities

Oversight of Clinical OperationsResponsible for planning and coordinating patient care activities in partnership with MEMC leadershipCoordinates placement of patients based on established criteria and current processServes as the first point of contact for providers, ancillary departments, patients, visitors, staff, and outside agencies to coordinate services, resolve issues, and promote service recovery as needed.Escalates unresolved needs or issues to the correct manager / director/ administrator for assistance with resolution.Makes staffing decisions for nursing departments based on patient care needs and competence of scheduled nursing staff.  This includes type and numbers of staff needed in specific departments, moving staff to departments other than their “home” department, and assigning additional tasks.Adheres to staffing established staffing guidelines and recommends changes to the guidelines to nursing leadership.Compliance with Standards of Care and Regulatory RequirementsMaintains standards for professional nursing practice in all care settingsAdvocates for compliance with regulatory requirements and performance improvement initiativesAssists with implementation, and supports compliance with MEMC policies and standardsParticipates in creating or revising nursing policies, procedures, or standards as requestedSupport of Clinical Leadership StrategiesCollaborates with nursing leaders, Inpatient Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to support and participate in the following programs:New employee orientationOngoing Competency validationUtilization Management, Case Management, Care PlanningRequired training and educational programsContributes information and observations to the appropriate manager or director for performance evaluationsAttends and participates in at least 80% of nursing leadership meetings, and supports decisions and outcomes from those meetingsSupport of Organizational StrategiesPromotes the SEARHC seven standards of excellencePromotes SEARHC Mission and Values the shift interactions with allResource for Clinical Care NeedsSteps into direct patient care role as needed to provide for changing patient care needsIdentifies needs for personnel, supplies, equipment or other resources and acts to supply the need and communicate ongoing deficits to the correct leaders.Behavioral StandardsPerforms duties independently, exercising professional judgment in the correct course of action for any given eventAble to remain calm, react in a constructive manner, and make sound judgments in emergency and high stress situationsAddresses performance, behavioral or quality of care issues at the time they are identified and escalates the issue to the appropriate manager, director or administrator as need to reach resolution.Provides positive feedback as appropriate for staff who meet or exceed performance standards.  Makes recommendations to leadership for additional recognition of outstanding performance as appropriate.

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing with Associate DegreeBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing preferredCommission Corp Officers meet billet description requirements for 0-4/03CC063 Nurse Manager or 0-5/03CC067 Senior Nurse Manager

Experience:

5 years professional nursing experience preferred; of that minimum 2 years as staff RN in Obstetrics (OB), Emergency medicine (ED), or Critical Care (CCU) specialty preferred1 year with supervisory responsibilities preferred

License/Certifications:

A valid, current, full and unrestricted RN license. AK license must be obtained within 6 months of hireMust have American Heart Association (AHA) Heartcode Basic Life Support (BLS). ACLS and PALS at hire or must be obtained within six months of hire and biannually thereafterNRP  and TNCC preferred

Knowledge:

Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes (including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to provide professional nursing care to patientsKnowledge of Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures in order to fully comply with, and advocate compliance with on proper application of these measuresDemonstrated competencies in OB, ED, CCUNursing Standards

Skills:

Knowledge and skills in computer systems including Microsoft Excel, Access, WordKnowledge and skills as a super user in EHRProficient in nursing procedures and basic nursing careAnalytical skills to apply scientific principles in operating and monitoring of basic and specialize medical equipment (ex: defibrillator, gastric and thoracic suction, EKG machines, ect.)Excellent oral and written communication skillsStrong, sound decision-making and critical thinking skills

Ability to:

Required Certifications:

Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association, Registered Nurse License - State of Alaska - Alaska State Board of Nursing
