SHIPFITTER (WELDER)
Summary You will serve as a SHIPFITTER (WELDER) in the Lifting and Handling Department (Code 200), Crane Engineering Division (Code 210), Crane Maintenance Branch at TRIDENT Refit Facility, Kings Bay (TRIREFFAC-KB). of TRIREFFAC KINGS BAY. Responsibilities You will be responsible for providing crane maintenance both preventive and corrective to TRIREFFAC-KB Category I, Category II, and Category III cranes. You will be responsible for repairing, overhauling, or modifying equipment that involves complicated and varied systems that are included on the portal, dock, and gantry cranes which are required to be maintained by TRIREFFAC-KB. You will be responsible for fitting, fabricating, designing, modifying, repairing, assembling, and installing various types of metal and metal alloy parts, equipment, systems, and structures. You will be responsible for performing required planning, layout, and fitting work involved in repair and construction of projects. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of the Position without More than Normal Supervision. Ability to perform welds by various means of welding processes in various positions including flat, horizontal, overhead, and vertical on metal of various types, which includes steel, bronze, aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, and special alloys of such. Ability to perform fabrication (fitter) duties using verbal communication, sketches, and blueprints from engineers, supervisors, or other facility personnel. Ability to perform the required planning, layout, and fitting work involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of equipment and structures. Ability to utilize the skills and knowledge to set up, use, and/or operate the full range of welding equipment and welding processes and devising special jigs and fixtures to hold the parts to be welded as needed. Ability to apply skills in using prepared clamps, fixtures, or jigs to assemble materials or parts for welding and using practical knowledge and ability to position and control the torch or arc and feed the welding rod or electrode to obtain the weld bead size required, penetration desired, and prevent burning base metal while welding common, similar metals of varying size, shape, and thickness to loose tolerances.
