Job Summary
Under general supervision, provides a lead role operating side loader truck, training/mentoring other drivers and assisting Supervisors with various administrative tasks. On a daily basis, may be required to perform the work duties considered to be more difficult due to size of the collection route, obstacles in the route or factors related to service delivery. Answers questions and provides insight and tips to less experienced drivers and is responsible for serving as a mentor and resource to new drivers. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Essential Job Functions
+ Assists with scheduling work assignments, ensuring compliance with performance standards for work crews, directing the utilization of equipment, conducting periodic counts of new homes, and designing routes
to balance workloads.
+ Assists Supervisors with setting workload standards through time and motion assessments.
+ Assists with training and orientation to new drivers, including Side Loader Equipment Operators and Solid Waste Collection Truck Driver.
+ Performs ride-alongs with other drivers and acts as a mentor and resource to new employees.
+ Trains new drivers on pre/post trip inspections, maintaining equipment, and procedures for working with the Fleet shops.
+ Conducts safety briefings.
+ Assists with submitting accident / injury reports, and personnel statements.
+ Assists with scheduling subordinates for time off and/or vacation.
+ Prepares vehicle for daily assignment by performing pre-trip inspections.
+ Operates and maintains side loader truck on highly complex and difficult routes.
+ Maintains and uses personal protective equipment (PPE).
+ Distributes PPE and other equipment to staff.
+ Collects assigned route, frequently lifting and carrying material weighing 40 pounds.
+ Unloads collected materials at disposal or processing facilities.
+ Prepares driver's report at the end of the day to report any malfunctions with the vehicle.
+ Cleans cab of assigned vehicle at the end of the day and washes vehicle once a week.
+ Courteously responds to citizen's inquiries about departmental services and programs.
+ Delivers literature which identifies acceptable and non-acceptable materials.
+ Maintains written and digital records, such as those detailing equipment performance, tonnage of debris received, and expiration/renewal of operators' driver's licenses.
+ Performs other related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
+ High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency)
+ Two (2) years of commercial truck driving experience, to include one (1) year of experience with the City of San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department with no disciplinary actions
+ Valid Texas Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL), plus all required endorsements

+ Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
+ Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Knowledge of State, City, and department regulations, rules, and policies related to the collection and disposal of solid waste
+ Knowledge of vehicle safety procedures and practices
+ Knowledge of commercial vehicle operating procedures
+ Knowledge of city streets, alleys, and rural areas
+ Ability to safely operate a Solid Waste vehicle in heavy traffic and in all types of weather conditions
+ Ability to develop work schedules and coordinate work assignments
+ Ability to operate a computer and other basic office equipment, as well as basic computer software
+ Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with co-workers, supervisors and the general public
+ Ability to read and interpret data collected
+ Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
+ Ability to exercise independent judgement and work with limited supervision
+ Ability to work primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust, damp or wet surfaces, and high noise level
+ Ability to perform all the essential functions of the position, with or without accommodations
