SUMMARY OF POSITION PURPOSE
A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the clinical director (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and provides general or direct supervision of other staff.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
+ Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis on polysomnography.
OR
+ Successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one-year duration associate with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility of equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies requires of a polysomnographic Technician.
OR
+ Successful completion of an AASM accredited A-Step program.
AND
Sleep technicians or technologists attending PSG or sleep studies affiliated with HST must have appropriate personnel certification. Examples of certification in PSG and sleep technology for technologists are:
+ Registered Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT)
+ Registered Electroencephalographic technologist (R. EEG T.) – PSG
+ Certified Respiratory Therapist -Sleep Disorders Specialist (CRT-SDS)
+ Registered Respiratory Therapist Sleep Disorders Specialist (RRT-SDS)
+ American Board of Sleep Medicine Registered Sleep Technologist (RST).
Credentialing must be provided by nationally recognized credentialing organizations such as:
+ Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) that provides (RPSGT) credential; OR
+ American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) that provides R. EEG T. – PSG credential; OR
+ Performed in a sleep center or laboratory accredited by the AASM, or ACHC, or Joint Commission; OR
+ ABSM that provides credentialing in sleep technology; OR
+ National Board for Respiratory Care, Inc. (NBRC) that provides specialty examination for respiratory therapists performing sleep disorders testing and therapeutic intervention (CRT-SDS and RRT-SDS).
