Overview The Small Engine Mechanic works on a variety of motorized power equipment to include UTV’s, Lawnmowers, Small Tractors, chain saws, and other outdoor power equipment. They service and inspect power equipment and diagnose any electrical, mechanical, and fuel system problems and make any necessary repair. Develops and performs a routine maintenance schedule. Responsibilities Responsible for services and repair of a wide variety of equipment such as power mowers, tractors, line -trimmers, pole saws, chainsaws, blowers and edger’s. Responsible for maintenance and repair of small engines, both gas and diesel, (includes 2 and 4 cycle). Provide routine maintenance such as replacing spark plugs and lubricating parts, repair or replace worn, broken, or defective parts and completing annual service. Maintains records of preventive maintenance, repairs made, orders, and time worked. Dismantles engines using hand tools, Examines parts for defects, Replaces or repairs parts such as rings and bearings. Cleans and adjusts carburetor and magneto. Ability to sharpen chain saw blades and lawn mower blades. Clean and maintain shop. Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with contractual, functional and mission requirements. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certifications: One-year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required. High School Graduate or Equivalent is required. Trades/vocational school preferred. Ability to pass and extensive background investigation EXPERIENCE: Three years of proven experience that includes duties as a small engine and/or equipment mechanic; or graduation from a vocational school with a certification. SKILLS: Expert mechanical abilities in small engine, diesel, and hydraulic systems. Ability to work independently without supervision. Must be self-motivated. Good hand and eye coordination. Keen attention to Detail Mechanical Skills Technical Skills MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED: Works with a variety of hand and power tools. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Works inside and outside. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day with the ability to be mobile throughout required work areas.
