SMT Engineering Manager

**EchoStar** has an exciting opportunity for an **SMT Engineering Manager** in our Hughes Network Systems division. This position will oversee and optimize Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in SMT assembly, process optimization, and team leadership, driving efficiency, quality, and yield while ensuring compliance with industry standards.
**Key Responsibilities:**
+ Lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of Manufacturing Engineers.
+ Develop and optimize SMT processes, including solder paste printing, component placement, reflow soldering, AOI/AXI inspection, conformal coating.
+ Troubleshoot and resolve SMT process issues to improve production efficiency and yield.
+ Work closely with design, manufacturing, and project teams to launch new products and drive cost, quality, and capacity improvements.
+ Establish and maintain process documentation, including work instructions, process control plans, and SOPs.
+ Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies.
+ Evaluate and implement new SMT technologies, equipment, and automation solutions.
+ Monitor key process metrics (CPK, defect rates, OEE) and implement corrective actions.
+ Lead DFM (Design for Manufacturing), cost optimization, and efficiency initiatives.
+ Conduct detailed design reviews to improve functionality and manufacturability.
+ Ensure compliance with IPC, ISO, and automotive/aerospace standards (e.g., IPC-A-600, IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, AS9100, IATF16949).
+ Develop and implement pFMEA to proactively identify and mitigate risks.
+ Lead DOE and Gage R&R studies for process validation.
+ Utilize data analytics tools (JMP, Minitab, R, etc.) for process improvements.
+ Implement SPC methodologies to ensure process stability.
+ Oversee equipment maintenance and ensure peak machinery performance.
+ Stay updated on emerging SMT technologies and evaluate their impact on production.
+ Manage high-volume manufacturing operations while maintaining quality and safety.
+ Provide technical leadership in PCBA processes, including defluxing and conformal coating.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance product designs and manufacturing techniques.
+ Plan and execute projects to meet growing production demands, ensuring stakeholder alignment.
+ Own new products during pilot production through successful and sustained launch.
**Basic Requirements:**
+ Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, or related field.
+ 10+ years of SMT manufacturing and process engineering experience
+ 5 years in a leadership role.
+ Must be a U.S. Person (e.g., U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, U.S. National or a protected individual under 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3)) as position requires access to U.S. export restricted materials.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Strong knowledge of SMT equipment (pick-and-place machines, screen printers, reflow ovens, AOI, X-ray, SPI).
+ Proficiency in process control tools, SPC, DOE, and failure analysis.
+ Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and process improvement methodologies.
+ Strong problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to solutions.
+ Excellent communication and leadership abilities with a hands-on approach to team management.
+ Experience with MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) and Industry 4.0 technologies is a plus.
+ Experience with CAD, Gerber Viewer, and DFM software such as Cadence, Vayo, etc is a must.
+ Experience with IPC 610 Class III manufacturing is a plus.
+ Medical Device, Automotive, or Aerospace experience is a plus.
+ Certifications in IPC standards (IPC-A-610, IPC-A-600, J-STD-001, IPC/WHMA-A-620) are a plus.
Will be eligible for discretionary bonus, with funding based on company performance.
The base pay range shown is a guideline. Individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level and competencies. Candidates need to successfully complete a pre-employment screen, which may include a drug test and DMV check.
