**Overview**
**SOCIAL WORKER (CLINICAL) - (GS-0185-12) - Naval Medical Center, San Diego, CA**
Downtown San Diego is located on San Diego Bay. Balboa Park encompasses several mesas and canyons to the northeast, surrounded by older, dense urban communities including Hillcrest and North Park. To the east and southeast lie City Heights, the College Area, and Southeast San Diego. To the north lies Mission Valley and Interstate 8. The communities north of the valley and freeway, and south of Marine Corps Air Station Mirmar, include Clairemont, Kearny Mesa, Tierrasanta, and Navajo. Stretching north from Miramar are the northern suburbs of Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Penasquitos, and Ranch Bernado. The far northeast portion of the city encompasses Lake Hodges and the San Pasqual Valley, which holds an agricultural preserve. Carmel Valley and Del Mar Heights occupy the northwest corner of the city. To their south are Torrey Pines State Reserve and the business center of the Golden Triangle. Further south are the beach and coastal communities of La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach. Pont Loma occupies the peninsula across San Diego Bay from downtown. The communities of South San Diego (an Enclave), such as San Ysidro and Otay Mesa, are located next to the Mexico-United States border and are physically separated from the rest of the city by the cities of National City and Chula Vista. A narrow strip of land at the bottom of San Diego Bay connects these southern neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

**Responsibilities**
+ Work with highly complex cases in which individuals are severely impacted by moderate to severe psychiatric diagnoses to include factors such as, history of trauma, co-occurring conditions and suicide.
+ Assist clients in identifying and managing personal, psychological and interactive problems, and in achieving effective personal, occupational, marital, and family development and adjustments.
+ Provide comprehensive social work services in the form of casework and case management by consulting on or developing discharge plans for complicated cases, psychosocial assessments and mental status examinations on behalf of beneficiaries.
+ Analyze information collected to identify symptoms, determine psychiatric diagnosis, develop treatment plan and/or determine advisability of counseling or referral to other specialists or institutions.
+ **Conditions of Employment:**
+ Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
+ This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
+ This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
+ This position requires that applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
+ This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
+ The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
+ This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
+ This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
+ In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
+ This position may be required to work overtime, holidays and weekends.
+ This position has a requirement to lift up to 44 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

**Individual Occupational Requirement for Social Worker:**
**Degree** : Master's degree (or higher degree) in social work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. (NOTE: You must attach copy of your transcripts)
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
**Specialized Experience:** One year of specialized experience which includes conducting bio-psychosocial evaluations of behavioral health patients, providing individual or group clinical counseling, and developing behavioral health treatment plans or recommendations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
**Selective Place Factor Requirement:**
**Licensure** : A current, active, valid, unrestricted clinical license to practice Social Work independently, offered by a U.S. State, District of Columbia, commonwealth, territory or jurisdiction. (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your license)
