Social Worker / Counselor will perform a full range of clinical social work services geared to the young adult psychiatric patients on assigned inpatient unit and/or hospital program in support of the patient’s primary therapist/treatment team. Interviews patients and families to assess psychosocial problems, develop treatment plans, and monitor and evaluate patient progress. Conducts individual, family, and group therapy sessions for patients and their families in order to assist in resolving personal and environmental problems which prevent them from achieving their highest level of psychosocial functioning. Participates as a member of the treatment team. Develops and assists in the implementation of discharge and aftercare plans.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

Knowledge of psychiatric disorders, diagnoses, and therapies; social work theory, principles, and practice; and basic computer usage skills - acquired through completion of a Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education. Possession of a Maryland State Licensed Master Social Work or Counselor license at the time of appointment and continuously throughout tenure in position (LCSW-C, LMSW, LCPC, LGPC). Employee will be required to demonstrate the core competencies (as defined on the competency assessment form) required for the specific adult patient population served.  Will be required to receive 100 hours of supervision provided by a board-approved SPHS LCSW-C supervisor and is expected to apply and sit for the LCSW-C license within 2 to 3 years’ of acceptance of LMSW role.   Will be required to participate in a minimum of 3 hours of face-to-face supervision per month with the LCSW-C supervisor.  Will be responsible for maintaining documentation, for at least 5 years, of supervisory sessions including dates, duration, and focus of supervision, to be available for verification to the Board Knowledge of psychiatric terminology, social work therapies and techniques, and community referral resources - acquired through six to twelve months' of relevant field or work experience in a clinical social work capacity. Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with stressed, hostile, irritable or emotionally dependent adult patients or family members, conduct therapy sessions, and represent the Hospital to outsiders (51-80% of work time). Analytical ability to resolve psychosocial problems including: assessment of patients' needs; development of goals and appropriate treatment strategies; discharge planning; critical thinking skills and ability to set priorities. Working with emotionally ill individuals and their families and meeting deadlines for making contacts, conducting therapy sessions, and completing discharge planning very frequently (51-80% of work time) produces a high level of mental/visual fatigue.
