Job Description
The Software Applications Developer II plays a key role in supporting Texas A&M AgriLife’s digital infrastructure by designing, developing, maintaining, and enhancing a wide range of web and software solutions. This position emphasizes concurrent project execution, enterprise-level web development (especially WordPress), integration of emerging technologies, accessibility compliance, and close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The developer will contribute to both back-end and front-end efforts, enabling modernization and operational efficiency across AgriLife's digital platforms.
This role requires a strong foundation in software development, proactive problem-solving, technical leadership for projects, and the ability to translate business needs into accessible and scalable digital solutions.
Responsibilities:
+ Design, develop, test, and deploy complex software applications and websites, primarily using WordPress, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and related technologies.
+ Convert and migrate websites to WordPress, modernize layouts, and implement branding and responsive design.
+ Develop custom WordPress themes, templates, plugins, and reusable components following accessibility (WCAG/Section 508) and security best practices.
+ Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across applications and websites; manage support tickets and service requests.
+ Coordinate with clients and internal teams to gather requirements, define project scope, and document functional specifications.
+ Provide technical oversight for projects, mentor junior developers, and ensure adherence to quality and coding standards.
+ Collaborate on the integration and optimization of tools such as Qualtrics, Asana, and enterprise CMS systems.
+ Contribute to data architecture, system evaluations, and strategic technology planning initiatives.
+ Maintain documentation, style guides, and technical reports; participate in evaluation of new platforms and technologies.
+ Assist in developing project timelines and resource planning; align deliverables with organizational priorities.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s deg ree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Three (3) years of professional experience in web/software development or related experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills.
+ Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with shifting priorities.
+ Proven experience with modern web development: WordPress, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript.
+ Experience with PHP development, especially for custom WordPress plugins/themes.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG/Section 508).
+ Familiarity with version control (Git), DevOps practices, and CI/CD workflows.
+ Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues efficiently.
+ Proficiency in software design, application debugging, and performance optimization.
+ Strong attention to detail and commitment to code quality, security, and documentation.
+ Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Preferred Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
+ Experience in full-stack development and working within large, multi-site WordPress environments.
+ Familiarity with Linux-based hosting environments, Agile methodologies, and containerization (e.g., Docker).
+ Graphic design or UX/UI skills and experience with Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools.
+ Experience with enterprise IT support, digital strategy alignment, and ITIL practices.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Expertise in PHP, jQuery, JSON, REST APIs, and MySQL.
+ Experience with enterprise-level content migrations and platform consolidations.
+ Strategic and analytical thinking to align solutions with organizational goals.
+ Comfort with project planning tools and managing workloads across teams.
+ Knowledge of higher education or public sector IT environments.

+ Full-time remote work is not available for this position. However, partially remote work may be available, pending employee eligibility requirements are met in accordance with AgriLife Alternate Work Location Procedures.
