General NotesThis is for a position at J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin.
PurposeThe primary function of this position is to assist with the development, deployment, and maintenance of custom software applications for various groups within the Bureau of Economic Geology, including web applications, scientific business logic, and other data processing operations.
Responsibilities may include designing, developing, implementing, maintaining, and enhancing computer-based information systems to ensure efficiency and accuracy. This involves a full range of programming tasks such as analysis, coding, and debugging complex program logic, determining data needs and entity relationships, and designing database structures for efficient data storage and retrieval. This role may also involve assistance in developing user-friendly, standards-compliant application interfaces, determining business requirements, and making recommendations to meet existing and future software needs.
Additional tasks include maintaining standards, process improvements, and documentation, as well as communicating with internal and external clients. The position may involve contributing to papers and presentations, writing documentation, fieldwork, teaching formal or informal courses on programming or related technical topics, providing project leadership, and directing junior staff.
ResponsibilitiesNew software development (web, business logic, databases)
Maintenance of existing software applications and server infrastructure

Required QualificationsTwo or more years of experience in full-stack web software development using a Javascript UI framework (Angular, React, etc.)
Familiarity with Git.
Good communication skills – written and oral
Preferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree in computer science or other related field or four years’ experience in full-stack web software development.
Familiarity with at least one GIS platform (ArcGIS, MapBox, QGIS, et cetera)
Familiarity with SQL database design and deployment
Familiarity with other software development technologies, such as AI or machine learning
Salary Range$70,000+ depending on qualifications
