Department Summary:
MITRE's Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications (NC3) Futures Department focuses on developing innovative solutions to provide mission essential capabilities. We specialize in creating mission-critical software systems and enhancing software development processes. Our team designs and prototypes modern approaches to improve complex systems, guiding the technical and programmatic direction of both new and existing programs.
We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and independent Senior Software Engineer with at least 5 years of experience. This role offers the chance to significantly impact various sponsor outcomes, influence strategic directions, and identify new opportunities across diverse areas. Responsibilities include engaging with military personnel to understand their mission needs, collaborating with military, civilian, and contractor engineering teams to develop innovative solutions to complex problems, and working with program managers to shape and execute projects across multiple teams. This role also involves mentorship to junior engineers and providing technical leadership across key programs.
Roles & Responsibilities:
In this role, you will collaborate closely with military and civilian personnel from the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC) at Offutt Air Force Base, NE. Together with your MITRE colleagues, you'll leverage your software engineering skills to address complex adaptive systems challenges. You'll gain experience in Systems Thinking, which will help you understand the system not just as individual components, but as an integrated whole. Your responsibilities will include:
Collaborating across various sponsor domains as part of an interdisciplinary team to develop solutions and strategies that enhance quality and speed up the delivery of software systems. This includes tasks like prototyping, research, software processes, modeling and simulation, technical design, and requirements gatheringAssisting in the creation of an automated testing program, which will include automated integration, functional, and API testsHelping to develop Digital Engineering models that will guide the advancement of a software-intensive systemEngaging directly with end users to understand their mission requirementsWorking with customers and sponsors to create and manage a Program-level Product BacklogCollaborating with software development teams to transform Product Backlogs into functional softwareRecommending software upgrades and migration strategies for existing customer programs and systemsContinuously learning new tools, techniques, and practices to keep up with the rapidly changing technical landscapeBasic Qualifications:
Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience in the tech industry with a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Top Secret/SCI clearance.Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, or PythonExperience with version control systems such as GitExperience with automated pipelines in tools such as GitLab or JenkinsUnderstanding of Agile/Scrum development principlesFamiliarity with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) practicesKnowledge of system architecture and software development lifecycleStrong problem-solving skills and attention to detailExcellent communication and teamwork skillsPreferred Qualifications:
