Tetra Tech Solid Waste West (SWW) has an immediate opening for a full-time Solid Waste and Recycling Planner to support our Diamond Bar, California office in sustainable solid waste materials management planning. The position offers opportunities to work within a large international firm on many exciting projects with an environmental focus. Our business unit focuses primarily on planning, design, construction, permitting, regulatory compliance, and program implementation for solid waste management programs and projects. This position will provide opportunities to work on projects that focus on waste reuse and reduction planning, circularity and sustainability in waste management, alternative technologies to landfilling, green renewable energy projects, food waste prevention and reduction, waste characterization, solid/organic waste facility, and collection program development. The successful candidate will become part of a team that will execute projects locally and internationally that make a difference in the communities served and the environment. The pay scale for this position is $80K-$105K, based on qualifications and experience.
Your Role:
Write clearly and concisely; contribute to and assemble complex technical reports and planning documents per department standards. Research and document waste management practices locally and internationally to assess and develop recommended improvements. Assist in developing programs for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. Conduct surveys and support public education and outreach efforts in waste prevention, recycling, and sustainability. Research and review essential information contained in regulations, environmental documents (Environmental Impact Reports, Negative Declarations), General Plans, Zoning Codes, local land use permits, and existing technical reports for use in technical, regulatory compliant reports and plans. Coordinate and meet with, schedule, and audit commercial organic generators. Coordinate and oversee waste characterization studies. Read and interpret drawings such as site plans, grading plans, circulation plans, and any other drawings or figures essential to technical reports. Interact with clients, regulators, office Project Managers, design, and other staff as needed to develop and finalize planning technical, regulatory compliant reports and permit application packages. Travel to facilities to gather information and attend meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Environmental/Sustainability Studies, or a relevant field from a 4-year university. Five plus years of experience with solid waste and recycling planning. Experience in waste characterization, landfill diversion planning, and food waste prevention programs is a plus. Ability to write cohesive, technically complex reports, business correspondence, and a variety of other written documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from regulatory personnel, managers, clients, stakeholders, and the general public. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret existing project information required for regulatory compliance documents, technical design information, and/or governmental regulations. Ability and willingness to perform visual inspections and characterization of trash. Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a variety of coworkers, regulators, and clients. Computer skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools (word, excel, project), AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Suite (graphic design), and other digital technology applications.
