MITRE’s N934 Space Intelligence Systems integrates technology and domain expertise to deliver solutions across organizations that develop, deploy, and operate spaceborne capabilities. We help ensure overhead users get the right data at the right place and time to deliver the mission.  The Department is seeking to bring on one skilled and people-focused Group Leader (GL) to our Department Leadership Team.  The position is centered in Chantilly VA area (the sponsor and MITRE Chantilly site). 

The N934 GL is a pivotal member of the Department leadership team, tasked with inspiring, coaching, and rewarding employees – enabling them to grow, thrive and prosper at MITRE.  They serve as a working supervisor – in addition to responsibilities in leading and developing people, they are responsible to deliver high value/high impact outcomes within a diverse and unique work program.  To ensure effectiveness, candidates are expected to be currently supporting MITRE’s National Space Program (NSP) for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) or be willing to support the NSP at least 50%.

Highly competitive candidates will bring a strong technical background, including demonstrated expertise and technical leadership experience in one or more of the following areas: Intelligence community (IC), space systems, National overhead collection programs and capabilities, TCPED, theater and/or operational support to field users; experience working within or across the intelligence collection disciplines (e.g. SIGINT, GEOINT, etc.) as well as the corresponding Sponsor agencies; signal acquisition and processing technologies; intelligence collection management.

The GL is expected to work in partnership with other department and division leaders to guide our technical and business direction, ensure quality and impact of current direct work, shape the future of our work programs, and grow the workforce.  GLs must be able to balance department management and leadership responsibilities with direct work program commitments as assigned, with a typical allocation of 5% coverage for GL responsibilities.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Talent Management and Development:

Serve as first line direct supervisor focused on staff performance management and development for a group of five (5) to eight (8) individual contributors (primarily engineers) within the N934 Space Department. Closely engage with assigned staff to provide career guidance and technical support through regular performance and development conversations; communicate with Project/Task Leaders on staff assignments and performance; assess staff performance and provide timely and relevant feedback to support continued development.Mentor group members to understand their career objectives and to identify opportunities and development resources to grow professionally.Engage in activities to match projects and staff, utilizing your network of MITRE connections.Advise staff in developing measurable goals that have impact for MITRE and the sponsor.Ensure staff are recognized for their impacts and accomplishments; help leadership understand and appreciate their technical and professional achievements.Responsible for completing employee actions in Workday and maintaining confidential employee HR information.

Organizational Leadership:

Support staff members in understanding the structure, mission, strategy, and related organizational concepts for the N930 Collection and Tasking Division, MITRE Intelligence Center, and Department and NSP.Serve as a catalyst to enable effective collaboration and communication between staff and Project/Task Leaders.Serve as a proactive liaison between staff and Department/upper management.Seek collaboration opportunities across work program portfolios.Facilitate open sharing of program and/or technical area knowledge with other managers and staff.

Technical Quality/Execution/Capability Development:

Promote technical quality of work products and participate in peer reviews.Ensure group members reach back to leverage MITRE’s capabilities appropriately.As a member of the Department Leadership Team:actively engage in workforce shaping and work program development,maintain awareness of emerging technical issues and opportunities,help in forecasting workforce levels and skillset demands, andsupport department talent acquisition efforts.Individual Technical Contributor: Actively contribute to one or more work projects within the NSP.

Basic Qualifications:

Active Top Secret/SCI clearance with polygraph.Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, etc.); or 8 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 5 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Lead or Principal step in MITRE Career Growth Model.Demonstrated desire to mentor, guide, and supervise a group of engineering staff and to serve in a management role.8 years’ experience contributing to technical work as part of a larger team’s delivery.Strong communications skills (verbal, written, briefing) and ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences across MITRE.Excellent interpersonal skills, judgement, discretion, diplomacy, tact, and ability to work with both staff and internal/external sponsors.This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s or comparable relevant technical experience (Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, etc.).2 years experience in a leadership role (e.g., Task Lead, Project Lead, etc.).Experience supporting the National Reconnaissance Office.Experience working on-site with sponsors in MITRE’s Intelligence Center.Experience with one or more of the following:  Intelligence community (IC), space systems, National overhead collection programs and capabilities, theater and/or operational support to field users; the intelligence collection disciplines (e.g., SIGINT, GEOINT, etc.).Broad knowledge of the division/department’s work, MITRE’s Innovation Centers and Labs, and ability to make connections across the corporation.
