PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Coordinate and facilitate the responsibilities of the special education department within the facility by working collaboratively with administration, staff, students, and parents to enhance the education of children with disabilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsible for evaluation of teacher performance, school payroll management, monitoring teacher professional development, school program oversight and monitoring of teacher curriculum. Assist parents in problem solving and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to support the development and implementation of their child’s IEP. Assist IEP teams in the development and implementation of IEPs, including student transition plans. Ensure timely completion of school assessments as required by state education requirements. Obtain consent to evaluate and reevaluate as required, prepare state required forms, conduct conferences and contact parents if patient/resident needs to re-enroll in a home school district. Assist in special education process by completing due process procedures, assess patient/resident academic/intellectual/behavior levels as needed, and prepare educational evaluation reports. Assist in writing IEP’s and coordinator the completion of diagnostic summaries. Coordination includes IEP meetings with home school districts and the coordination of new referrals with home school districts. Demonstrate knowledge of the legal basis for special education. Maintain school student database as required, as well as maintain records of patients/residents. Demonstrate a positive, empathetic and professional attitude towards customers always.  When patient needs are not met, acknowledge and work to resolve complaints.  Recognize that patient safety is a top priority.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor of Science Degree specializing in special education required. Special Education experience with exposure to psychiatric facility patients/residents preferred. Experience in the facilitation of special education services and coordination with school districts is required.

LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:

Requires State Teaching Certificate in Special Education.
