Job Title Special Services Technician III Full Time/Part Time Full Time FLSA Non-Exempt General Job Description This is a service position responsible for supporting the operations of the Transportation & Special Services unit within the Physical Plant Department. Responsible for performing routine repetitive work involving various physically demanding tasks including, but not limited to, trash disposal, general asphalt and/or concrete work, heavy equipment operation, custodial and housekeeping duties, general labor, or any combination. Assists with providing transportation services as needed. Serves as lead worker to special services crew. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Special Services Foreperson. Essential Job Functions 1. Serves as lead worker while working on assigned projects. Communicates instructions and leads others in performing work and following proper procedures.2. Drives and operates front-loading and/or rear-loading garbage truck.3. Empties trash from dumpsters located on campus and off campus at university-owned facilities.4. Empties and cleans garbage bins. Disposes of trash using utility vehicle.5. Drives to city landfill to dispose of trash when garbage truck has reached capacity.6. Manually moves furniture and other heavy items.7. Assists with setup and breakdown for university events.8. Serves as heavy equipment operator. Operates dump trucks, trailers, rollers/compactors, fork lifts, front loaders, asphalt machines, seal coat machines, bulldozers, backhoes, and other heavy equipment as needed.9. Performs general asphalt and/or concrete work including, but not limited to, seal coating, crack sealing, and asphalt/concrete paving.10. Performs general labor including basic grounds work (mowing, raking, sweeping, yard maintenance, etc.) and basic custodial work (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, cleaning, etc.).11. Drives road bus and/or shuttle bus and transports passengers to designated local and/or distant points as needed.12. Operates assigned equipment in a safe manner and in adherence with university policies and local, state, and federal laws.13. Participates in internal and external training to ensure work is performed safely and effectively. Non-Essential Job Functions 1. Loads and unloads delivery trucks.
2. Serves as back up to other departmental staff when assigned.
3. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.2. Knowledge of standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of sanitation and refuse removal.3. Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures.4. Skill in the use and operation of standard tools and equipment of the profession, including light and heavy equipment.5. Skill in the use of groundskeeping hand tools and equipment, in the operation of motorized and gas-operated equipment, and in the repair and maintenance of sidewalks and parking lots.6. Ability to perform maintenance and interpret drawings and diagrams.7. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.8. Ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license, SFA permit, and van certification prior to employment.9. Ability to obtain and maintain commercial driver’s license (CDL).10. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.11. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties. Physical Demands Required Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Required Experience and Training Three years of related experience is required. Experience with asphalt and concrete work, including street and parking lot construction and maintenance, is required. Experience in driving commercial class vehicles and operating heavy equipment is required. Must obtain a State of Texas class “A” commercial driver’s license prior to employment. Preferred Qualifications Passenger endorsement is preferred. Special Conditions for Eligibility This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check.
