Individuals in this position will be responsible for the care and husbandry of small rodents (mice & rats), as well as performing study preparation and lab support functions. You will learn how to work with biohazardous materials, radioactivity, and chemicals. You will learn proper animal handling techniques, proper animal care methods, and study setup. 

 

*Note: You will be working with live animals and as such you should have no trepidation about handling rats and mice and no known allergies to rodents. This position may include provision of weekend and holiday vivarium and animal care.

The Job

Perform animal care and facility maintenance/sanitation functions in accordance with QPS IACUC Policy, QPS SOPs, and AAALAC standards.Responsible for animal receipt and acclimation, including document preparation and documentation of initial health evaluation, gender determination, and animal weights as required by SOP.Perform proper animal husbandry (supply food, water, bedding, and do bedding changes) according to established SOPs and schedules.Responsible for daily room cleaning and sanitization within the vivarium, involving both live animal study rooms and non-animal areas to include sweeping, mopping, and/or disinfection.Assist the in-life staff with In-vivo study preparation to include set up of cages, provision of food and bedding, relocation of study animals to designated lab, etc., as needed to successfully initiate such studies.Inventory and order animal care, facility care, and maintenance supplies.Properly maintain food and bedding stock and storage area organization and cleanliness.Perform other functions as directed by supervisor.Early morning animal receipt (once per week) required.

 

Work Location

This job will be 100% QPS-office/facility basedWork Schedule: The schedule for this fulltime position is standard day shift Monday thru Friday, with the potential to cover some weekends and/or holidays (we can flex the work schedule to maintain a 40-hour work week; however, overtime pay will be given if needed)

 

Requirements

Combination of relevant education & experience that provides sufficient knowledge & skills, such as: Minimum of 2 years of relevant industry (animal care) experience Experience in a Regulated industry laboratory preferredMust be able to pass a post-employment occupational health physical exam and achieve respiratory clearance involving the use of an N-95 respirator. Please note that a current, validated tetanus shot is also required and will be given at the physical if needed.
