Specialist, Professional Development and Education Support Senior
Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for the Office of Faculty Affairs Professional Development (OFAPD), this position will assist the OFAPD’s mission which includes having the University of Maryland, School of Medicine (UMSOM) poised to offer world-class professional development opportunities to UMSOM faculty and beyond, including the development of SOM-specific programs focusing on topics such as leadership development, faculty wellness/wellbeing, among others. Programs are expected to be excellent in terms of quality and interest, with the goal of offering them on a national scale to faculty from other Academic Medical Institutions.
The Senior Specialist, Professional Development and Education Support will work closely with the Senior Associate, Associate, and Assistant Deans of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development as well as the Executive Director, to develop and administer faculty needs surveys, as well as programming on a variety of topics meaningful to SOM faculty. Expected programming topics will include: personal and professional growth, wellness/wellbeing, work-life balance, job satisfaction, transition to retirement, leadership skills, and other related areas of interest. The incumbent will work closely with the Senior Associate Dean to develop a strong support system for faculty regarding grant writing and grant submissions. As such, successful candidates should have some experience with the grantsmanship process.

Primary Duties:
Administer Continuing Medical Education (CME) opportunities and content sources meaningful to UMSOM faculty.
Prepare institutional data for high-level presentations and planning.
Assist the deans with high-level university-based grant writing and grant acquisition, including independent creation of paragraphs, relevant tables and illustrations, reference management, requests and management of recommendation and support letters, and timely grant submission. High lever organizational skills are critical to the success of this role.
Represent OFAPD with campus partners in terms of grant and professional development activities and develop original content to represent OFAPD at national meetings.
Increase visibility of OFAPD to faculty at UMSOM and nationwide, including showcasing institution-wide projects and research through a variety of means (social media, e-mail, newsletters, fliers, etc.). Includes content generation and dissemination.
Provide guidance to faculty and staff in academic and administrative departments on promoting engagement, learning, development, and programming.
Cultivate partnerships with retired and Emeritus faculty, sponsors, donors, and others with the goal of growing a professional development fund to be used for faculty awards and professional development programs.
Lead the development of an Emeritus Academy to mentor research and clinical faculty throughout their careers.
Assist deans with developing a list of national/international awards, annually seeking, compiling, and submitting nominations from UMSOM faculty.
Collaborate with the Executive Director on courses and events including some after-hour, before-hour, and weekend courses.
Provide superior customer service and exhibit/model professional and courteous behavior.
In collaboration with management, plan, administer, and coordinate new or revised professional development and education programs for faculty. Ensure that goals, objectives, and deliverables specified are accomplished in accordance with priorities, time and funding limitations, or other specifications.
Independently coordinates the day-to-day activities and events of the course, workshop, or conference. Provide advanced administrative support to management. Evaluate effectiveness in order to develop and implement new or improved methods.
Leads the development and implementation of communication and dissemination strategies, including providing oversight to social marketing strategy, making media appearances, and maintaining content on website.
Perform specialized administrative and academic functions, including data analysis, program coordination and monitoring, data collection, database creation, surveys, reports, and recommends program changes.
Monitor and maintain relationships with contractors or consultants to ensure compliance with work plan and deliverables.
Leads the preparation of final program and financial reports for submission to management or outside agencies to include reporting on work of University of Maryland, all subcontractors, and applicable consultants regarding operation of the programs.
Prepares grant proposals/submissions for funding and/or funding continuation from outside sponsors.
Develop and coordinate workshops, meetings, or conferences with high impact on program and/or participants. Coordinate logistics, scheduling, and participant communications.
Coordinates program activities through delegation of assignments to staff. May supervise and mentor other support staff.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Three (3) years of administrative/coordinator program experience.
Supervisory Experience: One (1) year in work coordination, training, and daily oversight of staff, students, or volunteers preferred.
Certification/Licensure: N/A.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. Participate in strategic planning. Skill in consultation and change management.
Conceive of, lead and coordinate event planning, including New Faculty Orientation, Promotion Celebrations, among others.
Determine and enforce processes, practices, and/or policies. Manages operations, workflow, projects, and/or systems that have strategic impact. Accountable for operational resources.
Manage office budget.
Oversee overall direction of University OFAPD faculty development projects and initiatives that have significant University and National impact.
Oversee and execute strategic faculty professional development goals that directly align with SOM and campus strategy.
Manage OFAPD presentation on our website, including website development.
Authority to make managerial decisions and conclusions, informing Sr Associate or Vice Dean of results. Provides transformational advice and support to leadership on SOM long-term strategic vision. Decisions and quality of execution have significant impact to the SOM and University.
