JOB SUMMARY:
We have two positions: one leads Plant McIntosh’s Safety and Health Team, and the other leads Plant McDonough's Safety and Health Team, ensuring compliance and the well-being of all personnel. For this role, it is important to foster a culture of safety excellence and encourage active participation in safe work practices. The role involves providing direction, training, documentation, and reports, as well as performing analytics on all personnel. This position is responsible for effectively communicating safety and health-related information to the plant employees as well as onsite contracting groups. This position ensures that the site's safety business strategy, safety and health management systems, and Southern Company safety program requirements are being met. The successful candidate will interface with OSHA, external regulatory agencies, and internal support organizations. This individual will serve as a liaison between management, external support, external agencies, and the plant.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)
Field experience as it relates to fossil power plant generation and general industry safety standards is required. Certification from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is preferred (ex. CSP, CUSP, CHST, GSP, ASP, etc). 4-year degree in Occupational Safety and Health Management is preferred. Successful completion of OSHA specific training preferred. OSHA Training Certifications are preferred. OSHA 30 is preferred. In-depth knowledge of current safety and health laws and regulations as they apply to fossil generation and general industry is preferred. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations and procedures. Prior experience partnering with outside regulatory and support agencies is preferred. Ability to effectively communicate to multiple work groups pertaining to safety requirements is required. Knowledge of Self-Assessment (Auditing) procedures and processes is a plus. Strong leadership, teamwork and people skills required, coupled with high integrity and ethics. Consistently models all aspects of Our Values by Southern Company. Consistently demonstrates initiative, self-motivation, and excellent organizational skills. Prior experience in developing compliance strategies, policies and procedures preferred. Proficient in Microsoft computer skills such as SharePoint, Planner, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word are required. Must possess an unrestricted driver's license.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain knowledge of new and current safety and health laws and regulations as they apply to Generation and use that knowledge to ensure full compliance with all regulations, policies, and procedures. Perform or assist with audits/assessments with strong attention to detail. Must be available for callouts, some nights and weekend work as required and overnight travel. Interfaces with regulatory agencies, assists in program writing, and ensures notification of the appropriate agency in cases of non-compliance. Effectively manages and works to eliminate risks associated with Safety and Health programs. This role requires the employee to educate workgroups on Critical Risk Management and conduct verifications to ensure proper understanding and adherence to critical controls. Communicate critical safety-related items to leadership, ensuring they are aware of current safety performance, potential risks, and necessary actions for continuous improvement. Proactively leads and implements Safety & Health Initiatives. Assists in the development and implementation of plant compliance strategies, policies, procedures, action plans, and guidelines in the areas of safety and health. Educate/train employees on Safety and Health policies and procedures. Educate plant personnel on job risks, risk mitigation methods, and compliance-related issues (safety and health) using various skills and techniques. Lead and educate on Human Performance principles to ensure a Behavior Based Safety Program is being followed for employees to work safely every day. Perform Post job Reviews and Event Learnings on safety related incidents. Provide leadership and guidance to the Plants Safety & Wellness Committee. Provide leadership in general safety meetings and department safety meetings. Support the Emergency Response Team and possibly serve as a Fire Specialist. Investigates non-compliance incidents and ensures appropriate reporting and notification. Maintains the confidentiality of reports and incidents, as well as disability management cases. Ensures compliance with permits by monitoring equipment and interfacing and communicating with plant personnel and contractors. Performs safety walk downs (audits to eliminate risks associated with Safety and Health). Works with onsite contractors to ensure safety and health compliance for all employees.
