What you can expect from this position:

This position will report to the Manager, Airfield Maintenance. Under the daily supervision of the Supervisor, Airfield  Maintenance, this position is responsible for maintaining, painting and laying out of surfaces, roads, ground related areas, and supporting operations of the airport.

As Specialist, Surface Maintenance & Pavement Markings, you will:

Use various types of pressure applicators on runways, taxiways, aprons, and groundside roads to apply paint according to manufacturer’s recommendations including the application of reflective glass beads to increase visibility of markings. Assist in snow removal operations as required throughout the winter months by operating various types of specialized equipment. Operates a variety of heavy and light equipment designed for airports to control ice and snow contamination on the movement area. This includes application of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals. Clean and maintain painting equipment inventory. Prepare all surfaces for painting, laying out of areas to be painted from drawings. Carry out maintenance and repairs to all airport surfaces including airside and groundside (asphalt, concrete and gravel), and operates construction equipment as well as specialized airport equipment. Conduct walk about inspections and picks up FOD (Foreign Object Debris) and litter for all airport areas including Groundside and Airside surfaces. This includes manual FOD and litter pickup, changing and emptying of FOD bins and garbage cans, as well as the use of small and large vacuum and mechanical sweepers, tow behind FOD units, etc. Demonstrate to new employees, the proper method of operating Airfield Maintenance equipment, and conducts AVOP training as assigned. Conduct daily inspections, maintenance programs and cleaning on all mobile equipment and vehicles being utilized. Includes maintaining cleanliness of assigned facilities such as the AMF. Repair and maintain all fences and non-illuminated signs, inspects signs and fences when required. Act as first level response to contain oil and other spills or clean up debris from Motor Vehicle Accidents on Airfield and Groundside and delivers Airport Emergency Support equipment as required. Manually clear obstructions such as snow and ice from tight areas on the aprons not accessible by mobile equipment and from airfield edge markers and signs. This can also include manual application of anti-icing and de-icing materials.

This unionized position is classified at the Band 5 level, with an hourly wage of $39.00, based on a 40 hour work week. If you are the selected candidate, you must be available to commence the duties of the position once a selection decision has been made. As part of the competitive process, you may be required to complete a practical test. An eligibility list may be created.

Secondary school education/GED and/or experience in heavy equipment operation Valid “D/Z” Provincial Driver’s License Ability to obtain and retain “D” class Airside Vehicle Operator’s Permit (AVOP) Ability to obtain and retain a Transportation Security Clearance

 Knowledge and skills you bring, that set-you up for success:

Ability to write and speak English fluently. Ability to Multi-task in order to deal with multiple radios and multiple functions on the equipment. Knowledge of ISO 14001 related procedures, spill containment procedures, Hazmat and TDG procedures as they relate to the job and the ability to utilize a vehicle to chase wildlife as required. Ability to work outside in all types of weather. Ability to work Airside. Ability to lift varied amounts of weight for extended periods of time. Knowledge of the operation, mechanics, inspection, and regular maintenance of heavy equipment such as snow plow/sweeper/blower units, chemical applicators and back hoe. Knowledge of equipment operation such as trimmers, mowers, power tools, snow melters, shot blaster, grinders, and high-pressure applicator equipment. Knowledge of Airfield and Groundside layout and maneuvering in the areas. Knowledge of asphalt, concrete and gravel repair and maintenance work. Knowledge of fence, gate, and sign repair practices and landscape maintenance techniques. Knowledge of paints and their properties and understanding the principles of pavement marking. Basic knowledge of TP 312 section dealing with paint markings. Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills, show initiative and sound judgment, be dependable and show a mature approach, and have tact and resourcefulness in conflict and pressure situations Ability to work on a rotational shift basis (days, afternoons, midnights)
