This is an exciting opportunity for a HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist looking to join the Synnovis Microbiology team, providing support for a specialist service for a range of complex patients. You will be joining an exceptional and dedicated team who always go the extra mile for the benefit of our patients. We are a progressive, UKAS ISO 15189:2012 accredited service who provide a comprehensive range of investigations which include bacteriology, parasitology, mycology and infection surveillance for Kings College Hospital and the local community. This full-time role consists of a 37.5 hour week; working 08.54-17.00 Monday to Friday with a 1 in 4 Saturday shift 08:00-13:00 as part of the core hours. Following appropriate training and orientation, the successful candidate will be required to participate in mandatory weekend shifts and residential on-call shifts on a rotational basis. Main duties of the job The Microbiology Department receives over 350,000 samples per year and currently uses BacTALERT, Vitek MS, Vitek2, Vitek Compact, Cepheid and DS2 with a view to introducing further automation. The laboratory also uses Clinisys Winpath LIMS and Q-pulse; experience of these systems would be an advantage. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a high quality laboratory service including bacteriology, parasitology, mycology and infection surveillance. You will be required to perform scientific analyses on a range of samples to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care and resource management within the hospital. The post holder will act as a specialist and lead on knowledge within their particular discipline. They will be required to work with a high degree of autonomy as well as part of a team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist will be responsible for performing safe and accurate scientific analyses on a range of samples following SOPs. Based upon sound knowledge and experience, to designate, on receipt, the range of tests to be performed on various samples. This involves making judgements about which machines or platform to use, whether confirmation is necessary by other methods etc. and requires an understanding of infectious disease and the manner in which the laboratory addresses the diagnostic process. To use and maintain automated equipment following manufacturers guidelines and training. Carry out first line troubleshooting of equipment. To ensure a sound knowledge of the laboratory IT system, to look up and enter results, book in patient data, request tests, authorise results and other similar tasks. Maintain high quality standards including quality control reviews and quality assurance. Undertake technical validation of laboratory results to ensure accuracy and precision.
