About the Role
As a Specialist HF Communications Engineer at Babcock, you’ll bring deep expertise in ionospheric science and HF communication systems to solve complex technical challenges. You will conduct innovative design studies, analyse ionospheric data, and develop algorithms that enhance Extended Distance High Frequency Communication Systems (EDHFCS). Your work will directly influence communication system performance and ensure solutions are grounded in cutting-edge scientific insight.
You’ll play a key role in planning and delivering your own tasks to time, quality, and cost targets while also producing and reviewing technical documentation to support system development. Your insights will be instrumental in integrating ionospheric data from multiple sources and developing heuristics to guide effective use in real-world communication environments. As a technical lead, you will present findings to internal stakeholders and external customers, ensuring technical excellence is shared and understood across the business.
About You
You are an industry-recognised expert in the behaviour and analysis of the ionosphere and its implications for HF communications. Your background includes extensive experience in statistical analysis of complex datasets and developing algorithms that extract actionable intelligence from ionospheric data, making you uniquely equipped to tackle the technical demands of this role.
With a strong foundation in systems engineering and a preference for RF, HF, or related communications disciplines, you have worked across the full system lifecycle — from requirements definition to commissioning. You are confident navigating technical interfaces, documenting your findings, and transferring critical knowledge to colleagues, helping to build a stronger, more capable engineering function at Babcock
To be successful in this position you will bring:
Extensive relevant experience in relatable technical/engineering roles within a Defence environment. An expert understanding of applicable engineering toolsets (e.g. PLM or MRP systems, design, simulation and analysis software). Industry recognised expert in understanding of the Ionosphere and how it relates to HF Communications. Demonstrated experience in applying statistical analysis to data. Demonstrated systems engineering experience coupled with preference for engineering experience in a RF, HF and/or communications relevant discipline. Experience in requirements definition, interface definition, subsystem design, installation supervision, set to work, and commissioning.
