The Speech Language Pathologist screens and/or evaluates speech, language, oral motor skills, swallowing, and cognition, scores and interprets tests, plans and provides therapeutic intervention, provides patient and family education, and communicates with outside agencies and referral sources. Provides age-appropriate care and services to patients from the age of birth to 21 years, and select adult patients.

The Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion constitutes the largest facility on a pediatric campus devoted to the mental health in the country, representing an unparalleled commitment to behavioral health clinical services and research.

 

The following position is specific to behavioral health services at The Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This position may include, but is not limited to, the following behavioral health service areas:

1)         Youth Crisis Stabilization Unit (YCSU) - a 16-bed unit designed to provide mental health treatment and crisis stabilization services to youth and adolescents with a 3-4 day average length of stay

2)         Inpatient Psychiatric Units (Child, Adolescent, and Neurobehavioral) - 12-18-bed units with  group style environments designed to provide mental health treatment, crisis stabilization, and linkage with intensive follow-up services with a 7-10 day average length of stay

3)         Psychiatric Crisis Department and Extended Observation Services – 10+ bed units that offer real-time crisis intervention for patients and families currently experiencing a behavioral health emergency.

This position is contingent upon the ability of the individual to pass and maintain competency in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training. Training and opportunities to maintain competency are regularly offered and funded by the organization.

Responsibilities Evaluates patients with varied diagnoses to determine developmental and/or functional status using standardized measures or clinical observations; identifies patient's strengths and deficits; establishes goals; and develops an individualized treatment plan incorporating patient and family needs. Administers therapeutic treatment to patients with developmental delay or functional deficits to provide optimal development, function, and independence; utilizes developmental activities and other treatment techniques to meet each patient's specific needs and achieve therapy goals; observes progress and/or changes in patient's condition and modifies treatment plan accordingly.Educates patients/parents/caregivers on treatment goals and therapy plan; instructs on therapeutic activities to follow at home; documents instruction; and evaluates ongoing compliance and understanding. Documents patients evaluation results, objective status, progress towards goals, treatment plan, and recommendations in compliance with documentation requirements of the hospital and accrediting associations; utilizes appropriate computerized or standardized documentation methods, as applicable to caseload. Communicates patient's status and collaborates with physicians, third-party payors, and relevant healthcare providers.Participates in Evidence Based Practice, maintaining active knowledge of peer reviewed literature and implementing this information in best clinical care.Maintains the administrative functions of individual caseload, including scheduling patients for treatment, entering daily patient charges, and submitting timely documentation to appropriate parties. Conducts formal and informal Speech Language Pathology educational programs for hospital staff, students and community. Delegates to students from accredited programs and supervises Clinical Fellows and licensed speech aides. Provides instruction to Medical Residents, Medical Students, Nurses, and other colleagues. Qualifications

Education:

Master's Degree in Speech-Language PathologyLicensure: Valid Ohio License in Speech PathologyCertifications: Certification in Speech Pathology from the American Speech Language Hearing Association, or eligible for supervision by a certified speech-language pathologist during a fellowship experience.CPR certification must be received no later than 60 days post hire or 60 days post-expiration.

 

Experience: Previous pediatric experience desirable.
