Speech Pathologist

 

 Position Summary:

Evaluates and treats patients with speech, language, cognition, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders as prescribed by medical staff. Participates in interdisciplinary care within the department and the hospital.

 

Responsibilities and Authorities:

A. Overall:

Plans and implements speech and language programs for patients through evaluation and assessment of patient needs. Has the authority to recommend disciplinary action pertaining to workers supervised.

 

B. Work Performed:

1. Performs other duties as assigned by the department's management staff.

2. As patient care and/or Hospital need dictates, both the assigned shift and work station may be changed by the department.

3. Participates in and promotes the “I CARE Advantage” service philosophy of Integrity, Customer Centered, Accountability, Respect and Excellence.

4. Performs essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

5. Administers medically prescribed speech pathology programs and treatments.

6. Completes medical documentation in an accurate and timely manner, consistent with rules and regulations.

7. Participates in educational and training programs for necessary personnel.

8. Works closely with Radiology staff performing MBS studies.

9. Attends hospital meetings and committee work as assigned.

10. Delegates appropriately to non-licensed staff.

11. Participates in rotating to necessary areas, setting will include but not limited to outpatient, wound care, rehab, acute care, and long-term acute care, to provide treatment coverage to patients where needed.

12. Responsible for participating in on-call schedule per PM&R/ Inpatient Rehab policy.

 

Qualifications:

A. Education:

Current Texas licensure or eligibility as a Speech Pathologist or current Texas Licensure as a Speech Pathologist-Intern. Current member of ASHA or NSSLHA. Speech Pathologist-Intern must have Speech Pathologist licensure within 18 months of date of hire and be a current member of ASHA within 18 months of date of hire. Failure to meet requirements will result in termination of employment.

B. Training and Experience:

Completed practicum experience in speech pathology from an accredited school. Current BLS Certification within 90 days of hire.

C. Job Knowledge:

Knowledge of theory and practice of evaluation and therapeutic treatment of speech, language, cognition, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders. Must have understanding of basic supervisory skills.

Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Some standing, walking and lifting of light equipment.
