APosition Summary:

Responsible for providing a full range of therapeutic services including assessment, treatment planning and therapeutic interventions in an interdisciplinary environment consistent with the position’s qualification, professional practices, and ethical standards.  The speech therapist shall also demonstrate accountability for the contribution to program development, quality improvement, problem solving, and productivity enhancement in a flexible interdisciplinary fashion.  Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) both identify and treat communication problems related to language and speech, as well as various swallowing issues. Working with patients of all ages, Speech Language Pathologists seek to improve communication skills through vocal exercises and cognitive therapies and work on swallowing deficits through various interventions. The employee will complete other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

1. Reviews physician's referral (prescription), patient's condition, medical history, and submitted medical records to determine speech therapy treatment required

2. Evaluate patients' speech and or swallowing through various standardized tests and clinical observations and evaluation and records findings to develop treatment programs

3. Develop a treatment plan for patients with specific goals and tasks

4. Plans and prepares written treatment program based on evaluation of patient and incorporate proper interventions that can help patients’ speech and or swallow deficits.

5. Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjusts treatments to achieve maximum benefit

6. Records treatment, responses, and progress in the patient’s electronic medical record and prepare reports as indicated by licensure, the provider, and or insurance recommendations

7. Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.

8. Completes documentation per clinical / department guidelines and meets expectations of monthly department chart audits.

Required / Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Must be a graduate of an accredited therapy program and performed the required clinical internships satisfactorily

EXPERIENCE:

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION Licensed by the state of South Carolina Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Examiners, and active with ASHA

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to utilize therapy equipment in the designated rehabilitation setting to provide treatment and procedures preferred.

Other:  American Heart Association Healthcare provider course with Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required to be initially completed with the GHS Staff Development Office within 30 calendar days of hire date (exceptions to obtain certification from a provider other than the GHS Staff Development Office are approved by Staff development on a case by case basis).  BLS Recertification is required every two years. ACLS preferred.

Administrative Supervision: None Required

Functional Supervision: Functional supervision of rehab technicians.

PAT Testing:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Light - Medium:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally (activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 15 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
