Sports Multimedia Journalist

WDAF-TV/FOX4, the Nexstar station in Kansas City, MO, is looking for an experienced Sports MMJ to join our winning team. Kansas City is home to the back-to-back champion Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, Sporting KC, KC Current, men’s and women’s Big 12 basketball championship and other NCAA championships. We routinely cover the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and University of Missouri sports programs. 

The ideal candidate should have strong sports photography skills and the ability to find and tell compelling stories, along with live reporting skills. Limited fill-in anchoring opportunities may be available for the right candidate.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Report sports stories for broadcast and our digital platformsShoot video for use in broadcasts or for other sports reporters to use in storiesArrange and conduct interviews, shoot video, edit packages and VO/SOTsUtilize solid sports knowledge to research topics, vet tips for credibility and relevance, gather information for broadcast and digital publicationReview copy for accuracy, style, proper grammar, and punctuation, following editorial direction and guidelinesPitch stories of interest to a diverse audience, while also understanding the importance of the target demographicPromote teamwork, bring a positive attitude and collaborate with station personnel from management, producers and assignment editors, plus sports team colleaguesInteract professionally with viewers/users on social media platforms to build engagement and brandBuild a network of sources to enable FOX4 to break stories and continue to lead the marketPerform special projects and other duties as assigned, including attendance at public events and community service initiatives

Requirements & Skills:

Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experienceFluency in EnglishExcellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to ad lib when requiredMinimum of two years’ experience shooting sports video and on-air reportingEngaging and dynamic on-air presenceAbility to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and manage multiple tasks simultaneouslySocial media expertiseKnowledge of current newsgathering technology, including video cameras, editing equipment and newsroom computer systems Valid driver’s license with a safe driving recordFlexibility to work a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends, as sports content needs dictate
