As a Materials Engineering co-op at Edwards Vacuum, you will play a vital role in contributing to technical advancements and interdisciplinary teamwork within the field of cryogenic pumps and vacuum techniques. This opportunity presents an excellent opportunity for you to expand your technical skills while collaborating closely with a team of materials engineer, mechanical engineers, and electrical engineers.
The experiences in this position will provide the materials engineering co-op with the opportunity for professional growth through the study of a wide range of materials being used in diverse applications including vacuum, wear, fatigue, cryogenic, and corrosive environments. We anticipate that the co-op will be working 20-40 hours per week.
Skills/Knowledge:
Candidate must be an undergraduate/ graduate student, pursuing a BS/ MS in Materials, Mechanical or Chemical engineering, have basic materials science knowledge (material structures, mechanics, processing, failures).Experience performing engineering calculations in Microsoft Products, MathCAD and/or MATLAB.A successful candidate will have some familiarity with one or more of the following techniques: SEM-EDS, XRF, FTIR, Hardness (Rockwell/ Vickers-Knoop), Metallography of metallic alloys, Optical Microscopy, GC-MS.Experience working in a lab, including a solid understanding of laboratory safety.Experience with Solidworks or CAD modeling is desirable but not required. Effective communication skills, both technically and collaboratively within a team setting.Capacity to work independently, while also seeking support from a larger team when needed.Proficient in presenting technical information clearly and comprehensively.Candidate must be 18 years or older.During your co-op, you will actively engage in a range of tasks related to material science, failure analysis, and product development within the realm of cryogenic pumps and vacuum technologies. Your contributions will include:Assisting in the design and execution of material experiments, utilizing cutting-edge technologies and analytical tools (SEM-EDS, FTIR, Optical microscopy) in laboratory and cleanroom environments.Supporting the investigation of material failures by preparing samples, conducting inspections and tests, analyzing results, and contributing to the determination of root causes. Collaborate closely with Quality and Engineering teams.Contributing to the preparation of technical reports and presentations, effectively communicating findings and results.Providing support for the daily safety check of the Materials Science Laboratory. The work will be both investigative and hands on in the laboratory and requires working with others both internal and external stakeholders.About Edwards
