Technology is seeking a results-driven, self-directed individual to join Northern Trust as Engineer for Unix Engineering Group

The Unix Engineer is responsible for planning, technical development and support of Unix ( Linux, Solaris, AIX ) Systems and OS environment.  Part of the Unix Engineering Team, Working on Unix Engineering and Unix Security Projects. Working on Unix Risk and Control Observations, Audit Items and Controls.

Work on core Unix Projects covering Operating Systems build, Unix LDAP, Lifecycle Management and Upgrades, Security Configurations

Required to have in-depth knowledge of current and emerging principles. Install new releases of operating system software and maintains existing software.

You will be part of a dedicated and outstanding team that focuses on promoting security control awareness and properly manage risks within the global information technology organization.

Responsibilities

Operate independently and have strong knowledge in Unix Platforms (Linux, Ubuntu, Solaris, AIX )  Carry out activities that are large in scope, cross-functional and technically difficultRole is balanced between high level operational execution and development, and execution of strategic direction of business function activitiesConduct preliminary analysisResponsible for direct interaction with different committees and/or managementWorking well with a global team, leadership/management, other technical and business teamsPlatform Security, ZoningUnix Platform Security, Platform Managementperformance Optimization and Troubleshooting:Monitor and optimize the performance of hybrid cloud applications and infrastructure components, identifying and resolving bottlenecks and performance issues.Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues related to UNIX/Linux systems, cloud services, and their integration points.Analyze and interpret system logs, metrics, and performance data to identify potential issues and areas for improvement.Security and Compliance:Ensure that hybrid cloud infrastructure and applications adhere to industry-standard security practices and comply with relevant regulations and Northern Trusts policies.Implement and maintain security controls, such as firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and encryption mechanisms, across on-premises and cloud environments.Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to identify and mitigate potential risks.Documentation and Knowledge Sharing:Document hybrid cloud architectures, configurations, and processes to ensure consistent management and knowledge transfer. Provide training and mentorship to junior team members, sharing best practices and knowledge related to hybrid cloud technologies and UNIX/Linux systems.

Qualifications

 Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Computer Science or a related discipline.8+ years of experience in Unix ( Red Hat Linux, Ubuntu, Solaris, AIX )Strong knowledge of Unix LDAP, File Systems, Volume Manager, NFSExperience with patching/updating the environment using tools like SatelliteStrong collaboration and relationship management skills, including experiences in management relationshipInnovative thinking and leadership with an ability to lead and motivate cross-functional, interdisciplinary teamsHighly flexible and adaptable to change, technology forward thinkingUnderstanding of IT Infrastructure Technologies VMWare, AzureProficient written and oral communication skillsExtensive experience with UNIX/Linux operating systems, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, or CentOS.Strong scripting and automation skills using languages like Ansible, Bash, Python, or Ruby.Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and container orchestration platforms like Kubernetes.Knowledge of networking concepts, including TCP/IP, load balancing, and firewalls.Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC) tools like Terraform, CloudFormation, or Ansible.Experience with automation, scripting and DevOpsExperience with patching/updating the environment using tools like SatelliteExperience with disaster recovery and business continuity planningFamiliarity with configuration management tools (e.g., Puppet, Ansible, CFEngine) and version control systems (e.g., Git).Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex UNIX-related issues.Hands-on experience with monitoring and logging tools, such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK stack.Proficiency in security best practices, including encryption, access controls, and compliance regulations.Strong problem-solving and analytical skills for troubleshooting complex issues.Proven ability to work independently and as part of a global team, managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneouslyCertification in RedHat, Oracle
