We are a small team with the opportunity to make a big impact. We are looking for a Sr Autonomy Engineering Specialist to serve as the Perception Architect of our team of experts in developing cutting-edge autonomous driving systems. You will be responsible for providing technical leadership for the design and implementation of perception architecture and algorithms and leading the creation of test plans and metrics for perception systems that includes sensor fusion, object detection, tracking and classification. We have a fabulous team that does some of the most exciting work at Caterpillar, and we can’t wait for you to join the team! **What You Will Do:** + Provide technical leadership for a 15 to 20-person perception team that includes experienced perception developers. + Collaborate with other technical leaders at Caterpillar to develop the perception requirements from application and customer needs. + Lead the team’s development of architecture specifications, high-quality perception algorithms, software design, verification plans, test cases, operating procedures, and metrics. + Provide leadership for the perception team in the use of appropriate tools to debug, test and maintain perception software, in the software verification and validation process, and the software releasing process. + Provide consulting on the integration issues of autonomy software with existing infrastructure components and products. + Work with the team to manage architecture, software and deliverables from other teams **Education requirement:** Requires a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related field. **What skills you will have:** **Technical Excellence:** + Extensive knowledge designing, writing, reviewing, and testing perception algorithms. + Proven ability to work on production products through design, implementation, customer rollout, and support. + Ability to decompose complex customer requirements into achievable technical requirements for the systems that make up the product. + Knowledge gained from previous work with production autonomous systems such as Cat Command systems or other centralized control system architectures which can be drawn upon for design proposals and decisions. + A strong focus on the technical needs in the autonomy area will likely include a working knowledge of Caterpillar’s Autonomous Infrastructure Software (AIS) or ROS and a working knowledge of perception and positioning technologies for off-road machines. + Demonstrated ability to mentor and train other engineers to help grow the overall organizational skill set. **Software Product Design/Architecture** **:** + Proven ability directing and contributing to efforts to develop, integrate, or test complex autonomy systems that meet prioritized requirements and time frame constraints for autonomous machine programs focusing on machine safety and productivity. + Extensive knowledge with the Agile software development life cycle, the C++ and Python programming languages, Eigen, Azure DevOps or Jira for project management and work item tracking, and standard software development tools (CMake, Git, SonarQube, Docker, GoogleTest, Artifactory, Clang) used in development of mobile robot perception systems. + Knowledge of cloud compute and storage tools, AWS EC2, S3, and Batch + Working knowledge of applying machine learning algorithms to perception problems and executing on a GPU or FPGA **Effective Communication:** + Demonstrated ability to direct and develop solutions for complex autonomy problems and define and enable consistent development and test processes that will be shared and used by the extended team. + Clearly communicate designs and tradeoffs with stakeholders and internal and external suppliers at multiple levels. **Top Candidates will also have:** + Advanced degrees preferred. **Additional Information:** The location for this position is Mossville, IL, Pittsburgh, PA or San Francisco, CA Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.
