**Pay Range:** $76.35 - $128.27 per hour

Directs the operation of the Comparative Research Center (CRC). including the CRC surgery area of Rush University Medical Center. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

**Required Job Qualifications:**
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) licensed in the state of Illinois
• Illinois state and federal DEA licensure
• American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board Certification
• Five (5) years exper ience with an AAALAC -International accredited laboratory animal care and use program
• Firm understanding of:
• animal facility management
• veterinary medicine
• personnel management
• animal facility budgetary management
• animal protocol systems
• IACUC functions
• animal physiology and behavior
• animal husbandry and care procedures
• physical plant and facility equipment systems
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements and animal program issues
• General computer literacy
• Self starter, ability to work independent of direct oversight
• Ability to work as a team member
**Preferred Job Qualifications:**
This position carries the potential for employee exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, chemicals and other hazardous conditions that may pose a potential health risk. Each employee is trained and is expected to observe all fire and safety procedures , blood-borne pathogen and hazard communication standards, and the institutional animal care and use program to include:
• Ability to handle, restrain and work in close proximity to all species of animals used in the facility.
• Ability to lift, move and/or place objects of a minimum of 501bs. in a repeated fashion.
• Working knowledge of biology, physiology and behavioral characteristics of each laboratory animal species.
• Working knowledge of personnel protective methods and devices.
• No known animal allergies
**Responsibilities:**
Administrative Functions
• Directs the operation of the CRC in a professional and diplomatic manner, maintaining the morale and respect of CRC employees , as well as the respect of the faculty utilizing the facilities. Demonstrates appreciation and understanding for the scientific expertise of the users while being sympathetic to their need for academ ic freedom, ensuring the well-being of the research animals and protecting the Institution against violations of any regulatory and funding agency policies.
• Together with the CRC management team, establishes realistic and practical budgets for two cost centers that allow the CRC to accomplish the tasks required to provide for the needs of the investigators and the well-being of the animals while keeping costs at a minimum. In addition, establish and support charges that recover a majority of direct cost of operation of the facility, while remaining comparable to other similar, local facilities.
• Through monthly reports, five-year plans, memos, letters, and other Medical Center reports, keeps the IAC UC, Vice President and other management appraised of all animal research related activities within the medical center, locally and nationally.
• Develops, for IACUC approval , policies and procedures concerning all animal use activities that take into consideration the needs of the scientists. the needs of the CRC employees and the requirements of the Medical Center.
• Conducts regular inspections of the facility to ensure that the facility is maintained in a clean, orderly state and in
• good repair.
• Ensures that the Medical Center complies with all regulations in the use of research animals.
• Provides support to the CRC management staff through advice, consultation and regular meetings.
• All other administrative duties required to ensure the smooth operation of the CRC and to provide for the well being of animals.
Veterinary Medical Functions
• Provides proper veterinary care, preventative medicine and humane treatment of all animals used within the Medical Center for research, teaching, or testing; directs the activities of the veterinary technicians and provides assistance as needed; provides health surveillance of the animal colonies.
• Establishes specific programs to assist in preventing the introduction of diseases from extramura l sources.
• Reviews health surveillance reports provided by animal suppliers and enforces restrictions on the entry of animals and tissues as required. Establishes and monitors disease surveillance to prevent epidemics and to keep investigators informed.
• If, during the conduct of experiments, the veterinarian finds that changes in the care and treatment of animals is required to comply with current standard veterinary practices or other standards, the Senior Director discusses with the investigator how to make these changes and assure compliance.
• Establishes and enforces policies and procedures designed to ensure the health and well-being of the animal colonies within the Medical Center.
• Performs surgery, diagnostic radiology, obstetrics, proctology, ophthalmologic examinations, and other diagnostic evaluations and treatments as required.
• Performs necropsies and clinical and histopathology diagnostics as required, such as hematology, bacteriology, fecal examinations, and skin scrapings .
• Oversees and advises investigators and technical staff in the use and development of surgical animal models.
• Advises investigators in project design and in the care and treatment of animals in their studies.
• Makes regular rounds of the animal rooms to check the health and well-being of the animals.
Committee Functions
• Administers and directs all activities of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
• Ensures that the IACUC and the Institution are adhering to all regulatory requirements while maintaining a moderate approach to the interpretation of the requirements so the committee does not unnecessarily complicate the conduct of research.
• Oversees the activity of the recording secretary of the IACUC and assures maintenance of meeting agendas, minutes, inspection reports, letters of assurance, and all other records required by institutional policy, PHS Policy, and USDA regulations.
• Oversees the generation of all IACUC correspondence, i.e., letters of approval, approved pending letters, etc.
• Participates as a voting member of the IACUC and IBC and reviews all protocols. Participates as a voting member of the Medical Center's Emergency Preparedness Committee.
• Oversees review of annual renewals of ongoing projects for the IACUC.
• Consults with investigators on projects and advises them on how to complete IACUC forms & reviews IACUC forms prior to submission to the IACUC.
• Keeps the IACUC informed of regulatory and animal rights activities.
Technical Services Functions
• Oversees special veterinary services such as collection and processing of diagnostic specimens, necropsy services, experiment dictated procedures, etc.
• Oversees daily maintenance of procedural support areas such as operating rooms, prep rooms, surgeon's scrub rooms, animal recovery, radiology, and clinical laboratory, necropsy, and procedure rooms.
• Directs the development and teaching of courses in the care and use of laboratory animals for animal care technicians, research technicians, and investigators. Provides technical assistance when required.
• Discusses animal models, experimental design, special arrangements/requirements, etc. with investigators.
• Maintains a good working relationship with suppliers of animals and other animal related materials.
• Operates facility based computer system(s) and software applications related to laboratory animal
management.
Personnel Management Functions
• Oversees the daily work schedules and responsibilities of and directly supervises the CRC Associate Director, Operations, Surgery Supervisor and IACUC Coordinator personnel in the CRC.
• Oversees the development and updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) consistent with
• Institutional and departmental policies and assures adherence to SOP's by all staff.
• Oversees the hiring process of all CRC personnel.
• Oversees the training and education of all CRC personnel.
• Oversees disciplinary activities of all CRC personnel.
• Oversees all annual review activities of all CRC personnel.
Continuing Education Functions
• Participates in several facets of continuing education in laboratory animal medicine, general veterinary medicine,
pathology, and administration of animal research facilities.
• Participates in continuing education opportunities as they occur, in particular, attend PHS workshops , the ACLAM , AALAS and AVMA annual meetings, veterinary medicine continuing education seminars, Chicago Branch AALAS and other regional and local meetings.
• Participates in continuing education as required to keep veterinarians current in all aspects of laboratory animal medicine and science and to assist in providing continuing education support for the animal care technicians, research technicians and investigators.
