Sr Manager, EHS - Retail Operations

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior EHS Manager to oversee the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs for our 160 retail locations. This role will primarily focus on safety, with a strong understanding of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) compliance as it pertains to damaged goods on arrival and customer returns. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in EHS management within a retail or similar multi-location environment and will be adept at promoting behavior-based safety programs and developing a culture of safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Safety Management:

Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive safety programs to ensure a safe working environment across all retail locations.Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to identify hazards and ensure compliance with safety regulations.Lead and train incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.Provide safety training and education to employees at all levels, ensuring a strong safety culture.Promote behavior-based safety programs to identify and modify unsafe behaviors through observation, feedback, and positive reinforcement.

2. Environmental Compliance:

Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including RCRA.Manage hazardous waste disposal and reporting in accordance with RCRA requirements, particularly related to damaged goods and customer returns.Develop and implement environmental management systems and policies.

3. Collaboration and Communication:

Interact and collaborate with the Retail Operations Department, regional managers, local managers, and safety boards.Maintain open lines of communication to ensure that EHS policies and procedures are understood and followed at all levels.Participate in safety board meetings to review incidents and discuss safety improvements.

4. Incident Review and Reporting:

Review accidents to determine if they are reportable or recordable under OSHA guidelines.Maintain accurate records of all incidents and corrective actions taken.Prepare regular reports on safety performance and incident trends for senior management.

5. Program Management and Development:

Develop and maintain EHS programs, policies, and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and continuous improvement.Monitor and report on EHS performance metrics and trends.Implement best practices and standardize EHS processes across all retail locations.

6. Training and Development:

Design and deliver EHS training programs for employees and management.Ensure that all employees are adequately trained on EHS policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

7. Leadership and Influence:

Foster a culture of safety and environmental stewardship across all retail locations.Act as a subject matter expert and provide guidance and support to regional and local managers on EHS matters.Influence and drive change to improve safety and environmental performance.

8. Developing a Culture of Safety:

Lead initiatives to develop a culture of safety, emphasizing the importance of safety at all organizational levels.Encourage and facilitate employee involvement in safety initiatives and committees.Recognize and reward safe behaviors and practices to reinforce the importance of safety.ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Degree Required:    Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field (or equivalent experience).Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in EHS management within a retail or multi-location environment.In-depth knowledge of RCRA and OSHA reporting requirements.Proven experience in safety program development, training, and auditing.Strong leadership and team management skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to travel up to 25%.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other relevant EHS certifications.Experience with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001/ISO 45001 standards.Master’s degree in a related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:

Frequent:

Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.Prepare and review incident reports and lead root cause analysis.Organize and deliver ongoing safety training sessions.Monitor and analyze EHS performance metrics.Ensure continuous regulatory compliance with RCRA and OSHA requirements.Hold regular safety meetings and discussions with employees and managers to address concerns and promote a culture of safety.Encourage and facilitate employee involvement in safety initiatives and committees.Maintain and foster open communication with the Retail Operations Department, regional managers, local managers, and safety boards.Promote behavior-based safety programs to identify and modify unsafe behaviors through observation, feedback, and positive reinforcement.

Infrequent:

Develop and present an annual EHS plan that outlines goals, initiatives, and resource requirements.Lead response and recovery efforts for significant incidents, including coordinating with external agencies and stakeholders.Review and update EHS policies and procedures to maintain cohesiveness across the company’s safety program.Lead strategic EHS projects and initiatives.Prepare for and coordinate external regulatory audits, responding to findings and implementing required corrective actions.Organize advanced training and certification programs for EHS staff.Plan and execute emergency preparedness drills.Prepare and deliver presentations to stakeholders on EHS performance and initiatives.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to travel up to 30%

INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT:

Develops objectives and general policies and procedures for a specific program or functional area of responsibility within general scope of established operational goals and plans. Day-to-day work and decisions do not require direction or review by immediate supervisor. End results are reviewed by supervisor.
