The opportunity

Magic Leap is seeking a Sr. Materials Scientist with a focus on plastics and adhesives to support product development, applied research, and manufacturing.

Our Materials Scientists work on the development and selection of new adhesives as well as evaluating their behavior and properties using a range of scientific instruments. The results of these tests are used to develop new materials, research the performance of a new material, improve the performance of existing products, eliminate failures with materials already in use, and help with the development of new technologies. We are looking for candidates who are motivated, creative, and dedicated team players who excel in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must have a strong technical background and rigorous approach to problem solving, documentation, and be able to communicate and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

What you’ll do

Material selection and implementation for product and manufacturing process development Conduct research into the structures and properties of polymeric materials, especially thermoset resins and adhesives in order to obtain information that will be used to develop new products or enhance current products. Identify optimal cure and processing conditions and aid implementation in high volume manufacturing) Operating and analysis of results  with a broad range of thermo-mechanical test methods for polymer characterization for product-relevant material properties, especially DSC, TGA, TMA, shear and tensile measurements, Rheometry, microscopy, profilometry,  Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various environments (processing, humidity, mechanical stress, etc.) on materials Analyze product failures to identify root causes and design implications, with focus on polymers, composite and adhesives failures Analyze and resolve, or assist technicians in solving work problems Assist in diagnosing issues for test instrumentation to provide accurate test data for engineers Collaborate with engineers and scientists from other disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical or optical engineering

The experience you bring

Master’s degree in a Material science, chemical engineering or related field +5 years of related work experience or PhD degree with +2 years of related work experience Deep knowledge of adhesives and plastics and their structure property relationship Expertise in material characterization methodologies such as DMA, TMA, Instron, Rheometer, TGA, FTIR, RAMAN,  Instron, PSA testing and DSC Experience with ASTM and other standard testings for mechanical performance and chemical characterization of plastics and adhesives Analyze and communicate materials data in a clear, organized manner and make recommendations that allow for informed decision making Good foundation in descriptive and inferential statistics with knowledge and experience in experimental design Problem solving and troubleshooting skills Ability to work independently or as part of a team Capable of working on multiple tasks and projects Highly detail oriented and self-motivated Applicants must have good basic laboratory skills related to consistent experiment methodology and safety

It’s exciting if you also have

Ability to code in MATLAB Statistical analysis (Six sigma certificate) Familiarity with failure analysis of electronic components. (PCB, BGA chips. Solder and reflow process, different types of electronic packages and their characteristics)
