Position Summary

As a Senior Patent Agent for Thermo Fisher's Analytical Instruments Group (AIG), you will primarily support the electron microscopy business. This business is dedicated to providing complex technologies that have advanced industrial processes, like semiconductor and lithium-ion battery manufacturing. It also helps answer important questions in the life sciences field. The technologies used can analyze a wide range of sample types, including protein structure and elemental composition in materials.

In addition to patent preparation and prosecution, this role will support robust patent portfolio development and sound risk mitigation procedures via invention mining, freedom-to-operate, competitive analysis, and IP strategy development. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can bring new ideas to the team and rapidly develop an understanding of technology as well as business strategy. As Thermo Fisher grows in line with its 2030 vision, the ideal candidate will bring insights regarding successful patent practice/process improvement to the department.

Site based position at one of the Thermo Fisher legal cluster locations in Hillsboro, OR; Pittsburgh, PA; or Morrisville/RTP, NC.

Travel: As the AIG businesses are global in nature some amount of domestic and European travel may be required.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and prosecute high-quality, commercially-relevant patent applications.Work in partnership with R&D teams to identify and capture high-value IP.Assess patentability and freedom-to-operate to counsel R&D and business colleagues.Manage and improve IP processes including innovation tracking and monitoring competitor IP activity.

Qualifications

Must be a registered US Patent & Trademark Office practitioner with 5+ years of experience in drafting and prosecuting valuable patents. Successful track record required.Bachelors degree in a field related to AIG technologies, such as physics or engineering, or equivalent experience. Practical experience with charged particle detection technologies will be an asset.Proven ability to perform complex IP analyses including product clearances, and prior art searches.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
