SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Senior Research Scientist (SRS) is to plan, coordinate, design, supervise, and carry out scientific research projects in coordination with the Principal Investigator. This includes the evaluation/interpretation of data and developing/revising techniques and protocols/assays to accomplish the proposed research aims. The Senior Research Scientist is also responsible for supervising, assigning, and reviewing the work of other laboratory/research personnel and determining specific goals or objectives to be obtained.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Research Contributions
Plans and implements all activities within a research laboratory to include operational functionality. Plans research projects under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. Develops new techniques and uses existing ones to carry out the goals of the projects. Carries out in vitro and in vivo experiments in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and immunology, including but not limited to cell culture studies, protein analysis, molecular biology, and immunology. Perform research or experimental tasks to supply information as part of a research project or laboratory. Responsible for plan and execute details of an experiment, including set up, timing (scheduled, staffed, planned), coordination of supplies and equipment at hand, functionality of equipment, trained personnel. Evaluate and interpret experimental results. Compile/prepare tables and charts. Participates in laboratory presentations. Presents findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares scientific documents for publication/manuscripts. Analyzes data and maintains records of research results. Communicates effectively with collaborators and vendors, both verbally and in written form. Defines and develops reports according to laboratory needs, which requires: good organizational skills, knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. Prepares graphics using Prism or similar software.
Equipment/Supply Management and Safety Compliance
Assemble, operate, and troubleshoot equipment. Responsible for laboratory equipment and implementing safety procedures. Troubleshoot problems with equipment as needed. Trains new lab members on equipment usage, maintenance and safety practices when required.
Research Support - supervise, train, teach and collaborate w/others
If necessary, provides direct supervision for others within the laboratory to ensure all laboratory standards, operating procedures, equipment, and standard techniques are being adhered to. Reviews and evaluates research activity of various laboratory personnel and consults with principal investigator to assess needed adjustments and/or alternative approaches. Collaborates with researchers at MDACC to advance cancer research effort and expand project aims. Keeps up-to-date on the latest techniques and implement these to assist our faculty in their research. Assist with preparation of grant applications and progress reports. Assigns and reviews the work of subordinates and determines specific goals or objectives to be obtained. Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Required: Masters degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.
Preferred: PhD or Medical degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: Six years experience in experimental or scientific work. With PhD or Medical degree, three years experience in experimental or scientific work.
Preferred: Experience working in the HBM department.
