About This Role:
The Academic Advisor at Lamar University plays a crucial role in supporting students throughout their academic journey, with a particular focus on high-risk students. This position involves guiding students through the entire matriculation cycle, from initial enrollment to graduation, ensuring they receive the necessary support and resources to succeed.
What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities:
+ Student Support and Advising: Provide comprehensive support to students, focusing on high-risk individuals, through initial enrollment, course completion, and re-enrollment each term. Offer personalized advising to help students develop academic plans and achieve their educational and career goals
+ Academic Planning and Course Selection: Assist students in selecting appropriate courses, developing academic plans, and understanding degree requirements. Utilize degree audit reports and predictive analytics to monitor and guide students’ academic progress.
+ Compliance and Policy Implementation: Ensure that university policies and state mandates are followed in advising and enrollment processes. Advise students on academic policies, procedures, and requirements.
+ Data Management and Reporting: Track and report student interactions, success data, and progress. Maintain accurate student records using advising systems and technologies and provide regular updates to supervisors.
+ Outreach and Engagement: Participate in university and recruitment events, present at New Student Orientation, and engage in ongoing assessment activities. Collaborate with Enrollment Management offices to support student matriculation and reenrollment decisions.

+ Ability to assess student needs and provide appropriate guidance and solutions.Familiar with Microsoft Office and student information systems or advising software.
+ Develop and expand academic advising strategies.
Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements for his position require the ability to sit for extended periods as much of the work involves desk and computer tasks. Proficiency in using a computer, including typing and navigating software programs along with the ability to read and interpret documents, emails, and other written material.
Job Conditions:
This position is in an office setting, with occasional meetings and events around campus. Standard work hours are typically Monday through Friday, with some flexibility required for evening and weekend events. Travel is generally limited to on-campus activities, conferences, or professional development opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications
+ Bachelor’s degree.
+ 2 years’ experience in academic advising or a similar role within higher education.
+ Excellent communication skills.
+ Interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
+ Excellent time-management skills

Preferred Qualifications
+ Master’s degree.
+ Previous mentorship of advisors and advising procedures.
+ Knowledge of literature and best practices related to undergraduate advising and student retention initiatives.
+ Familiar with advising tools, such as Banner, Degree Works, and Navigate.
