Hiring Range: $70,284 - $73,284 Work Day/Hours: 8:00am - 5:00pm The City of Durham’s Communications Office tells the City’s story through strategic communications, both written and digital, social media and via the news media. As a member of the Communications team, you’ll inform and engage members of the public, both internal and external, and develop relationships with our key stakeholders – City staff and leadership, community and corporate partners, news reporters and others. This position is responsible for the coordination of the citywide Language Access program ensuring that staff are informed about how the already established program functions and how to access vendors for translation and interpretation needs. Will also maintain vendor relations and updates as needed. This role is a communications generalist supporting the internal and external communication needs of assigned City departments. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Senior Communications Analyst will create and implement communication strategies, manage media relations, and develop content to meet departmental goals. This position requires a strong understanding of plain language principles, digital design accessibility, and the ability to adhere to and incorporate the City’s established brand standards to ensure cohesive, inclusive, and effective communication. Duties/Responsibilities Account Executive Duties: + Develop and implement strategic communications plans to help assigned departments meet annual business goals. + Create digital marketing and social media content, including flyers, postcards, and other assets, using design software while maintaining compliance with City brand standards, plain language, and accessibility guidelines. + Schedule and manage social media posts using social media management tools. + Design and assess marketing campaigns to support department initiatives, ensuring alignment with the City’s overall branding and messaging. + Promote special events using a variety of communication tactics that reflect the City’s visual identity and tone. + Manage media relations, including writing press releases, coordinating with media, and serving as a spokesperson when needed. + Draft speeches and talking points for executive staff that reflect the City’s messaging priorities. + Write and update website content for assigned departments, adhering to web accessibility guidelines and branding requirements. General Duties: + Plan and execute public relations, communications, and marketing efforts for programs, activities, and events, ensuring consistency with the City’s brand standards. + Advise senior management and staff on best practices for effective communication, including plain language and visual identity compliance. + Create and design promotional materials, including graphics, newsletters, press releases, social media posts, and short-form videos, ensuring they are accessible and align with brand guidelines. + Respond to media inquiries, monitor media coverage, and maintain positive relationships with media outlets. + Develop and manage social media campaigns across multiple platforms to increase reach, engagement, and impressions, incorporating the City’s established branding. Minimum Qualifications & Experience + Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, journalism, communications, or directly related field. + Five years of professional communications experience, including media, social media and communications advisory experience. Additional Preferred Skills + Fluent in Spanish (speak, read, write). + 3–5 years of experience creating and implementing strategic communication plans. + 3–5 years of media relations experience, including advising senior staff and managing press interactions. + 3–5 years of project management and digital communications experience, including website and newsletter content development. + 2–3 years of social media management experience, with a focus on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn, Bluesky, YouTube, and Nextdoor. + Experience with graphic design and social media management tools. + Proficiency in AP Style for written communications. + Experience creating or sourcing digital photography and videography for social media campaigns. + Knowledge of plain language principles and the ability to create accessible, user-centered content across all communication platforms. + Experience incorporating and adhering to established brand standards in all communication efforts. + Strong writing and editing skills, including plain language proficiency. + Ability to design visually appealing, accessible, and on-brand content. + Effective project management and organizational skills. + Strong interpersonal and advisory skills for working with diverse teams and executive leadership. + Familiarity with digital accessibility standards, including WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). + Understanding of brand management and the importance of consistency in messaging, tone, and design.
