**Job Description**
Position Description:
The Senior Director, Head of Clinical Development Japan provides leadership for development program strategies, clinical studies, and enterprise level business strategy. You will provide clinical study and launch leadership and work closely with cross-functional groups that include Clinical Development, Research, Translational Sciences, Clinical Operations, Regulatory, Patient Safety, Medical Affairs, and Commercial. You will work with the Global function to collaborate and pull through global strategies and relevant input from the Japan market. You will have direct leadership of the Japan Development Team for Kite, as well as lead a cross-functional team accountable for all development activities and deliverables across Kite Japan, such as Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Quality, Safety, and Biometrics.
This role was established to lead the development team in Japan and enhance cross-functional collaboration across all development functions in the country. This position will play a pivotal role should Kite clinical trial conduct expand to other regions in Asia and will support trial execution and/or oversight from Japan. This individual is a member of the Global Kite Development leadership team, reporting to the SVP of Kite Development. This role is recognized across Kite globally as a key resource within Development in Japan.
Knowledge, Experience & Skills:
+ Lead the Japan Development Leadership Team, which includes representatives from Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Safety, R&D Quality and Project Management, to maximize cross-functional alignment and collaboration across Development
+ Lead the development team, which will own the development and execution of clinical and regulatory strategies for high-priority development programs for the Japanese market
+ To meet project deliverables and timelines, provide high-level and complex scientific and clinical guidance to Clinical Trials Management, Biometrics, Drug Safety, Regulatory and Project Management staff
+ Lead a team of medical directors, clinical scientists, medical writers, etc. in the writing of protocols, investigator brochures, clinical study reports and review clinical trial documents
+ Serve as the primary point of contact for the program with the medical community in Japan and build effective relationships with KOLs
+ Provide strategic support and work closely with Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs), participation and insight in MSL activities, such as KOL interactions
+ Provides strategic input into Development activities in Japan and brings together Japan's Development functions so that cross-functional perspectives are represented and aligned. This includes tracking progress and working collaboratively to solve problems in development projects in Japan
+ Serves as a point of contact for global leaders on development matters in the Asia region and represents the local voice on local strategic priorities
+ Establishes and maintains strong working relationships with stakeholders across Kite and Gilead and at the local level to ensure the success of development projects
+ Works closely with other function leaders across Kite and Gilead to foster a diverse and inclusive organizational culture and create career development opportunities for those in the development organization
+ Has a dotted-line managerial relationship with local development functional heads and provides input to global managers of these functions regarding performance and career development. Solid line managerial oversight of these functional heads is the accountability of respective global functional leaders
**REQUIREMENTS:**

Basic Qualifications:
+ MD, PharmD, or PhD with 10+ years of clinical drug development experience in the biopharma industry, healthcare, consulting, academia or a related environment
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Regarded as a thought leader in drug development in Japan
+ 10+ years of direct line management experience
+ Has a thorough understanding of Japanese pharmaceutical regulatory requirements and impact on development and execution of clinical trials
+ Knowledge of clinical trial conduct in the Asia region (highly desirable) and proven track record developing collaborative local, regional, and global cross-functional relationships
+ Dotted line management experience is also preferred
+ Innate flexibility to work in a rapidly growing matrixed environment
+ Strong leadership skills with an ability to set a vision, lead change, and influence others
+ Strategic thinker who can formulate, develop and execute clinical strategies
+ Extensive experience interacting with and presenting to executives and managing budgets and other resources is strongly preferred
+ Demonstrated ability to align with other leaders and garner their commitment and engagement to cross-functional strategies, plans, and strategic objectives
+ Strong communication and organizational skills. Fluent in English
+ Ability to travel when needed
