SR. ENGINEERING MANAGER - SCIENCES

The Chief Scientist is responsible for the management of the Data Science and Sensor Physics (DSSP) group which is part of Weatherford’s wider RD&E organisation. This applied research group is responsible for the development and communication of the science, algorithms and workflows for the characterization, processing, analysis, and interpretation of our Formation Evaluation & Well Integrity measurements and answer products for the Wireline and Drilling Services business units. 

Main Accountability:

Demonstrates leadership, ethical behaviour, and adherence to Weatherford standards at all times.  Maintains a strong safety culture and a high level of integrity. Lead, mentor, and provide supervision to the DSSP team, direct people, and resources. Able to clearly communicate expectations, roles, and responsibilities to the DSSP team. Keep team focus on tasks and projects on hand to ensure on time and on budget delivery. Maintain effective communications with all key stakeholders both internal and where appropriate external. Strong communication and presentation skills are required to be able to communicate at different levels within an organisation. Provide support for existing systems, measurements and answer products including but not limited to calibration, systems analysis, trouble shooting and error management.  Be able to give training or guidance to peer groups within the business segment on any methods or techniques developed by DSSP. Provide support to Wireline production/manufacturing as necessary, including testing and QC. Sustaining support for 3rd party software. Perform editorial and review functions for papers and publications. Engagement with academic institutions by providing support on MSc and PhD projects. Active interaction with Universities, Societies, Conferences and Consortia, assume an active committee role. Be able to provide feedback to the Business on market trends and potential strategies gained from industry involvement. Provide support on IP filings and IP issues related to patents filed by relevant business units. Manage technology and evaluation requirements based on market needs. Perform vendor qualification as required. Helps define RD&E strategy across all FE related disciplines. Integrate information from diverse sources, innovate in multiple disciplines and think out of the box. Be willing to travel if required.

Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in any STEM subject. At least 15+ years of relevant oilfield experience. A good understanding of wireline and logging-whilst-drilling sensors and measurements. Specific knowledge of the principles of Nuclear, Acoustic, Electromagnetic and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance measurements and their usage in formation evaluation. Domain knowledge in geoscience, reservoir engineering or drilling engineering. A strong background in petrophysics and geoscience essential.  Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience with multiple direct reports. Previous research experience. Strong time management and organisation skills – managing multiple enquiries, opportunities and/or projects in parallel. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and be able to communicate statistical concepts to non-scientists. Excellent written and verbal competency in English is essential. Be able to work effectively with scientists from different disciplines. Good problem-solving skills, from identifying problems to articulating pragmatic solutions. Experience in and/or an excellent understanding of New Energy technologies such as Geothermal, CCUS, Hydrogen and gas storage would be deemed as supplementary and beneficial.  Self-motivated with problem solving and decision-making skills. Be willing to work independently and interface with cross-functional disciplines from other segments outside Drilling and Evaluation (DRE) such as Well Constructions & Completions (WCC) and Production & Intervention (PRI) segments.

Preferred:

An understanding of the fundamentals of project management methods. SME level experience in a relevant domain such as NMR, Nuclear Measurements, Resistivity or Acoustics. Working knowledge of well placement, geosteering and geopressured an advantage. Proficiency in industry standard Geoscience packages (e.g. Techlog, Geolog, IP, Petrel, Kappa, Eclipse). Proficiency in mathematical programming languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python, R, Julia, Fortran, C or C++). Knowledge or skills in FEM modelling an advantage. Intrinsic interest or experience in Data Science and ML/AI techniques. Knowledge of signal processing techniques. Understand the application of novel signal / image processing methods, including inversion techniques and machine learning. Able to adapt and respond to changes in environment and priorities and use excellent interpersonal skills to drive tasks to completion. Fundamental knowledge of other Weatherford business segments - Production, Completions, Well Construction, and Drilling & Evaluation.
