Sr. Environmental Engineer

The Senior Environmental Air Engineer will lead technical initiatives to ensure the company’s compliance with federal, state, and local air quality regulations. This role focuses on engineering solutions to monitor, control, and reduce air emissions. Responsibilities include emissions modeling, process improvement, permitting strategy, system design consultation, and cross-functional collaboration to implement effective air quality management systems. The role also supports broader environmental programs and mentoring plant teams to maintain operational excellence in air compliance.

Standard working hours are 8am – 5pm, Monday – Friday. This position requires routine travel, approximately 10–20% annually.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Analyze and model air emissions from industrial processes to ensure compliance with regulations such as the Clean Air Act (CAA) and state-level requirements. Design and implement air pollution control systems and engineering solutions to reduce emissions. Lead and manage Title V air permitting projects and new source reviews (NSR/PSD). Evaluate new processes, equipment, and facility modifications for air impact and permitting requirements. Conduct site audits and engineering reviews of air emission sources, control technologies, and stack testing results. Maintain and calibrate emissions tracking and monitoring systems. Support day-to-day environmental compliance operations and reporting (e.g., stormwater, emissions inventories). Provide technical leadership to facility engineers and EHS professionals on air compliance systems and regulations. Serve as subject matter expert for air quality compliance, tools, and regulatory changes. Train engineering and operations staff on air permit requirements and compliance best practices. Collaborate with Operations, Sustainability, and EHS teams on air-related initiatives and metrics. Engage with environmental consultants and regulatory agencies as needed. Contribute to ISO 14001 certification and continuous improvement activities. Lead and support investigations into environmental events or non-compliance incidents related to air emissions. Expectation to understand, participate in, and support company COS initiatives, with focus on developing a lean mindset. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Strong technical understanding of air quality engineering and control technologies. Demonstrated expertise in major source air permitting, including Title V and NSR permitting processes. Proficiency in emissions calculations, dispersion modeling (e.g., AERMOD), and monitoring technologies. Strong project management and vendor coordination skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and Word); familiarity with tools like SharePoint, ServiceNow, or Gensuite preferred. Excellent communication and analytical skills; ability to explain engineering concepts to cross-functional stakeholders.

Education and Experience:

Required:

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering (or related technical field). Minimum 10 years of environmental compliance experience, including at least 7 years focused on air permitting and engineering in a manufacturing or industrial setting. Experience in air pollution control equipment such as scrubbers, oxidizers, and filters.

Preferred:

Master's degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering. Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure. Certifications such as QEP, CHMM, or environmental auditing credentials.

Working Conditions:

Individual will operate primarily in an office setting, with a preferred hybrid schedule (ability to work from a home part of the week). This role has the flexibility to be considered fully remote, with more travel requirements. This would be subject to additional approval. Individual will occasionally be in a plant environment where it may be dirt, dusty, and hotter/colder than office settings.
