Sr. Hardware Engineer – Temporary Position

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The candidate is responsible to implement, characterize, and execute electronics hardware improvements involving precision analog and high-speed digital design activities in support of the Optical Communication Group’s product.  We expect the candidate to have a design background in mixed-signal circuit design. The chosen individual will design board level opto-electronic circuits addressing high speed OE (opto-electronic) conversion and well as low noise signal detection. Work will be focused on OTDR (optical time domain reflectometer) and OPS (optical protection switch) circuit designs and improvements.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Product Architecture & Physical Partitioning – 20%

Learn understand and document the electronic requirements of the optical design as applicable.  Design suitable circuitry with precision analog electronics, high speed signal converters and the FPGA interface. Identify elements of improvements in optical performance by leveraging electronics and algorithms Assist in deriving the PCBA and electronic component specifications for the electronic sub-system.  In collaboration with the system architect specify FPGA code for signal processing, computational, and interface elements.

Design & Implementation – 20%

Design suitable circuitry with precision analog electronics, high speed signal converters and the FPGA interface. Assist in resolving firmware issues in existing products. Work with engineers located overseas to create schematic entry, and bill of material generation. Guide the layout for complex mixed-signal circuit boards, and successfully implement prototype and final hardware release with compliance to specification and schedule. Assist in resolving firmware issues in existing products.

Design Verification – 60%

Perform Electronics Design Verification Testing and ensure specification compliance under normal conditions at design corners.  Numerical analysis of the test data for compliance with specifications (Excel, Python, or MATLAB)  Assist in porting firmware and FPGA code.

Education & Experience

MS in Electrical Engineering or Physics. Advanced educational qualifications will be a plus. Candidates having suitable professional experience with a BS degree will be considered. 5 to 10 years of experience in mixed signal circuit design, bring-up, and debug.

Skills & Other Requirements

Skilled in the design of optical receivers and transmitters for low to medium speed applications  Experience in low noise optical circuit design and analog to digital conversion (with FPGA and/or MCU interface)  Skilled in the use of circuit modelling such as SPICE, ADS, and MATLAB. Ability to work highly independently with minimal guidance from supervisor on specific tasks. Familiarity with FPGA or CPLD is a plus Ability to work efficient in a high pressure fast turnaround program

Working Conditions

Able to support a flexible work schedule due to collaboration with multiple worldwide facilities.
