What you’ll be doing

CIBC’s Legal Department provides legal support to assist CIBC in meeting its goals and effectively managing legal outcomes by providing independent and strategic legal advice to business management across all lines of CIBC’s business. We are hiring for a Senior Counsel position, and seeking candidates with a broad range of commercial litigation and competition law experience to join CIBC’s in-house Canadian Litigation Team.

The Team is called upon whenever CIBC or a CIBC company is involved in a legal proceeding in Canada. We take an active role in litigation strategy and management with outside counsel and provide proactive advice to mitigate litigation risk. We also handle some matters in-house.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.

How you’ll succeed

Legal Advice & Counsel – Provide proactive, responsive and sound litigation and competition  advice and management to all Canadian lines of business to assist with the mitigation of legal and reputational risk.  You will be highly responsive and provide strategic legal advice in relation to litigation matters including class actions, regulatory matters and internal investigations. An ability to speak French is an asset but not required.Court Experience - Be able to demonstrate significant litigation experience including conducting examinations for discovery, arguing motions and conducting trials. You have developed strong legal judgment and are comfortable running a matter from start to finish.Team Player – Utilize your proven track record of developing and sustaining good working relationships. You will work closely with your colleagues within the Legal Department and amongst the various internal partner groups within the Bank (lines of business, Communications, Compliance, Risk etc.). You will  work closely with outside counsel from an approved counsel list to actively and efficiently manage litigation matters.

Who you are

You can demonstrate experience in & have a minimum of 5 years of progressive and proven track record as a legal advisor with a top tier law firm or a major corporation. You have experience in providing litigation advice on a variety of complex issues & mitigating legal and reputational risk.You’re a certified professional.  You have been called to the Bar in Ontario and are a member in good standing.You give meaning to data. You enjoy investigating complex problems, and making sense of information. You're confident in your ability to communicate detailed information in an impactful way.You act like an owner.
