Sr. Manager, Laser Systems Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Technical leadership: Leads technical team, coordinating engineering activities for design, development, and implementation of new products.  Applies systems-engineering principles, including the analysis of mission CONOPS for the development of system requirements, structured decomposition of the requirements and designs into sub-systems and sub-assemblies.  Supports program management and operations personnel as technical lead on assigned projects.  Ensures that design concepts comply with customer’s specifications and are technically feasible and implementable.  Guides and supports product acceptance testing, qualification testing, and troubleshooting efforts.

Technical expertise: Exhibits a deep understanding of laser physics and engineering, especially high-average-power lasers used for directed-energy applications.  Exhibits strong degree of ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness to develop highly advanced technologies, processes, and concepts related to the design, test, and evaluation of high energy laser optical systems.  Plans R&D projects, troubleshoots critical processes, solves unusually complex problems, and provides technical expertise and guidance to the organization.

Business Development: Serves as a spokesperson on new business opportunities and specialized projects.  Serves as customer interface in meetings and other industry events is required.   Leads and writes technical proposals for the development of new business and assists in evaluating technical requirements, identifying exceptions, and preparing cost estimates for customer quotes. 

Personnel Development: Provides collaborative guidance to engineering team.  Provides feedback through coaching and mentoring.  Provides administrative and technical support to engineering management.

Education & Experience

Minimum B.S. in engineering field or applied physics. M.S. or Ph.D. in optics, applied physics or electrical engineering preferred.  Typically, 12+ years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Typically requires 7+ years managerial and leadership experience.

Skills

Strong demonstrated technical background in lasers and laser technology, especially high energy CW lasers with high quality beams.  Strong demonstrated technical background in laser optics and fiber technology.  Structured engineering background including familiarity and experience with systems engineering practices for the new product design and development lifecycle, including  mission analysis, requirements definition and derivation, establishing error budgets / engineering constraint budgets, interface definition, and tracking compliance progress throughout the development lifecycle.  Familiarity and experience with integration and test of complex laser systems involving feedback-loop control to achieve desired beam qualities, including  integration planning and sequencing, diagnostics and troubleshooting, formal verification planning and test design, and development of formal verification and qualification procedures.  Familiarity with executing to Department of Defense Contracts as Prime contractor or major Subcontractor is a plus.

Must be a U.S. citizen.  Must be able to be granted a security clearance.
