This position manages a team responsible for packaging development within a manufacturing environment.  The role overseas all tertiary packaging design and development, supports R&D packaging and Sanford factory in efforts to develop and execute packaging solutions, insourcing opportunities, and cost savings in terms of functionality, manufacturability, aesthetics, safety, innovation, recyclability, and sustainability.  A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.  The leader in this role would be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.  The team would rely on this manager’s extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals as well as coach and develop the team.  As the department is committed to development and growing the teams technical and business knowledge, the vision of the leader should compliment this concept and enable the team to thrive within the Coty organization.

 

THE ROLE

 

In this role you will be responsible for:

 

Manage and lead a team of SC Packaging Engineers and Technicians. Led the team regarding process, technical, test protocol and team support. Serve as a mentor and valuable leader of the COTY package development (RDP/SCP) community Support team efforts in research, trial, and implementation of packaging changes enhancing COTY Sanford’s ability to meet Service (Efficiency), Cost (Cost Reduction), and Quality (Right First Time) targets. Assist team in efficient project tracking and efficient status updates on all projects. Provide direction to the team on projects, tasks, and initiates to support business plans. Collaborate with R&D and coach team to actively engage during the i5D Stage Gate/development process at start-up by providing inputs into the design phase and participate in any line trials/qualifications of initiatives. Investigate alternative package designs to reduce costs and increase line efficiency as well as collaborate with internal departments and/or suppliers to identify cost savings opportunities. Responsible for team’s tertiary packaging designs, pallet patterns, assembly instructions and specifications based on R&D recommendations and factory requirements.  Oversea and manage all shopping channel packaging including design, testing, documentation, and submission to support business plans. Support the packaging lab to enable component and package testing. Support business continuity plans by duplicating specifications to new suppliers, increasing capacity with existing suppliers, identify/ qualify backup sourcing solutions as defined by Procurement and manage production transfer (in/out). Support quality improvement with review of specification tolerances, delivery methods and packing instructions, partner with engineering & production to improve process and support qualification of new manufacturing platforms. Support final industrialization and ramp-up for new initiatives. Collaborate with manufacturing and quality assurance to resolve component and specification issues for existing packages related to functionality, compatibility and quality. Ensure accountability of the BOM and provide any feedback of discrepancies or defects to R&D. Provide management of color matching for any supplier changes as part of factory initiatives. Manage all "C" level projects on an end-to-end basis and also manage any tasks that are delegated by R&D packaging to support business initiatives. Help Team resolve discrepancies, packaging challenges and determine true root cause using proper lean tools. Establish clear guidelines to maintain safe working conditions in the office and lab areas. Participate and manage the selection process of all exempt and non-exempt SC Packaging employees. Implement and follow up with the orientation program for new employees. Define the training needs of the direct reports and ensure the execution of the training plan. Ensure the necessary training for all technicians and engineers in the test methods and laboratory equipment used for qualifying packages. Ensure the appropriate execution of the Annual Performance Appraisal Program for their direct reports. Define and execute the individual development plan for each direct report. Systematically manage regular meetings with direct reports to access individual scorecards, status on main projects, and personal development. Travel to component vendors, outside contractors, Coty global offices and other sites as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

We’d love to see candidates who have:

 

B.S Packaging Science or equivalent Engineering discipline 10 years of Package Development or equivalent experience within consumer goods industry Experience with taking products from Research and Development into production. Experience with Design for Manufacture and Assembly. Lean Tools such as process mapping and standard work and root cause problem solving.

 

Functional / Technical Skills:

Testing methodology, laboratory procedures, and application of measurement standards including use of laboratory equipment Project Management Knowledge of palletization Software such as CAPE Pack and Logistical Specifications Ability to work and make decisions autonomously as well as within focused teams Ability to read and interpret blueprints and artwork Communicate and present on technical elements to both technical and non-technical audiences Ability to negotiate with vendors, marketing, and creative teams to secure approvals of package designs Ability to execute and provide risk transparency within accelerated launch timings Ability to manage multiple projects consecutively Define with direct manager development opportunities and execute individual training plan Ability to support a 24/7 manufacturing operation
