The Impact You’ll Make in this RoleThe person hired for this position will support technology, process, and product development activities for polymeric optical films for the Transportation & Electronic Business Group Laboratory. The person in this position will champion, sponsor, and lead cross-functional project teams from concept through successful completion for highly complex projects with significant business impact. The ideal candidate will perform well in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment and is able to manage multiple projects effectively while collaborating with personnel in divisions, manufacturing, and corporate research labs. It is expected that the person in this position possesses recognized expertise in extrusion processes, optics, and preferably multilayer optical films. The person in this position will be expected to design, conduct, troubleshoot, and provide coverage for film experiments at the pilot plant facility and manufacturing plants outside of St. Paul. As a Senior Product Development Specialist, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by: + Identifying and advancing new multilayer optical film product applications + Developing and advancing film process technologies + Supporting new product development and scaleup + Leading cross-functional teams tasked with new product and process development + Collaborating seamlessly with personnel in plants, divisions, and other internal and external resources as needed to accomplish objectives + Providing hands on process troubleshooting during lab and factory film experiments This role consistently identifies, initiates, plans, and assumes leadership of programs of major importance to the organization's interests leading to and/or supporting innovative applications and extensions of new and existing technologies, products and/or businesses. Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications: + Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering and/or science discipline (completed and verified prior to start) + Minimum of five (5) years of technology/product development experience in a private, public, government or military environment Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include: + Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Physics, or a related field + Laboratory, manufacturing, pilot plant, and/or production environment experience in a private, public, government or military environment + Strong expertise in physical optics, electromagnetic theory, and/or imaging optics. + Solid understanding of experimental techniques for optical characterization and testing. + Background in polymer processing and/or multilayer film extrusion processes + Experience leading complex projects and cross functional teams + Capable of providing hands on process troubleshooting + Excellent communication and interpersonal skills + Experience with code development for data analysis and machine interface (i.e., C++, C#, MATLAB, Python) Work location: + Work your Way: Job is lab-based and expectation is work onsite (Maplewood, MN) Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international Relocation Assistance: May be authorized Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status).
