Sr. Quality Engineer
Job Description SummaryThe Senior Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all aerospace components and products manufactured in our shop meet the highest quality standards and comply with both internal and industry-specific regulatory requirements. The senior quality engineer is responsible for implementing quality assurance by utilization of a deep understanding of aerospace manufacturing, regulatory requirements, and advanced quality engineering principles. The Senior Quality Engineer will be proactive identifying quality issues, collaborating across teams, lead quality improvement initiatives, conduct root cause analyses, and implement corrective actions to ensure product integrity, safety, and performance as well as driving continuous improvement to meet and exceed customer expectations.

Responsibilities

Lead initiatives focused on reducing defects, improving process efficiency, and driving operational excellence using Lean, Six Sigma, and other quality improvement methodologies.Drive continuous improvement efforts to increase first-pass yield, reduce rework and scrap, and enhance production throughput while maintaining the highest quality standards.Perform root cause analysis of quality issues using structured problem-solving methods (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone diagrams, FMEA) and develop effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).Manage and coordinate the non-conformance material through its process phases. Maintain a healthy non-conformance process ensuring cycle time execution by the process owners within expected goals while ensuring full compliance with quality management practices and procedures.Develop, track, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) for quality, including defect rates, first-pass yield, and on-time delivery, ensuring continuous improvement.Oversee inspection and testing processes for all manufactured aerospace components, ensuring conformance to engineering drawings, specifications, and industry standards.Lead First Article Inspections (FAI) and ensure Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) documentation is complete and compliant with customer and regulatory requirements.Ensure Dimensional Inspection and Visual Inspections are performed accurately and that all measuring equipment is calibrated and maintained in accordance with quality standards.Collect and analyze quality data, identifying trends, deviations, and opportunities for improvement.Provide detailed reports to senior management on quality performance, including defect trends, audit results, corrective actions, and progress on quality improvement initiatives.Act as the primary quality contact for customers regarding quality issues, providing timely updates and ensuring customer satisfaction.Lead product and process audits to ensure adherence to production and design specifications, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.Oversee and coordinate First Article Inspections (FAI) to ensure product compliance to customer specifications and regulatory requirements.Lead the investigation and resolution of quality issues, utilizing structured problem-solving methods such as 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), and other tools.Develop and implement Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) to address non-conformities and prevent recurrence, working closely with production, engineering, and supplier teams.Track and analyze trends in quality data, identifying root causes and proposing proactive solutions to minimize quality risks.Assist in audits and inspections, both internal and external, ensuring adherence to regulatory and industry standards. Support the preparation for third-party audits and ensure compliance during the audit process.Maintain up-to-date knowledge of aerospace industry standards and quality regulations, ensuring the shop remains compliant with evolving industry practices and customer requirements including FAA, NADCAP, AS9100, AS13100, GE Aerospace standards.Ensure that all quality-related documentation (e.g., inspection reports, quality control plans, non-conformance reports) is complete, accurate, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.Maintain records of quality data and prepare quality reports for internal teams and management, providing detailed analysis of quality trends, issues, and improvements.Prepare and present monthly and quarterly quality performance reports, outlining progress on continuous improvement initiatives, audit results, and any corrective actions taken.Develop and update quality control plans, inspection work instructions, and other documents to standardize and optimize processes.Work closely with production, engineering, and design teams to address quality issues, improve processes, and optimize product designs to meet customer requirements.Provide guidance and support to production teams on quality-related matters, ensuring that best practices are followed for the inspection, testing, and acceptance of parts.Facilitate training for production staff on quality standards, tools, and best practices to foster a culture of quality throughout the manufacturing shop.Work closely with engineering teams to address product design issues, ensure manufacturability, and resolve quality problems.Collaborate with production teams to resolve quality issues during manufacturing, ensuring timely resolution to minimize production downtime and non-conformances.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.5+ years of experience in quality engineering in the aerospace or defense industry, with a strong background in quality assurance and process improvement.Extensive experience with quality assurance principles, process improvement, and the implementation of quality core tools on production environment.Proficiency in establishing effective quality plan and product inspection plans and using statistical process control (SPC) toolsKnowledge of quality core tools FMEA, Control Plan, APQP, PPAP, and other quality engineering methodologies.Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and the ability to interpret complex technical drawings and specifications.Hands-on experience with inspection and testing methods for aerospace parts and assemblies, including dimensional inspection, visual inspection, and destructive testing.Extensive experience in managing AS9100, AS13100, FAA regulations, and NADCAP requirements in aerospace manufacturing or service environments.Proven experience in leading root cause analysis, corrective action, and continuous improvement efforts.Strong knowledge of aerospace manufacturing processes, such as machining, assembly, welding, composites, and surface treatments.Familiarity with NADCAP accreditation for processes like heat treating, welding, coating, or non-destructive testing (NDT).
